UK abuse investigation uncovers “unprecedented” numbers

The number of alleged victims as a result of investigations triggered by the Jimmy Savile revelations, is now reportedly as high as 500.

The number of alleged victims as a result of Operation Yewtree, investigations triggered by the Jimmy Savile revelations, is now reportedly as high as 500.

Scotland Yard’s inquiry into historic abuse has three strands – offences committed by Savile, those by him and others and those just by others.

The numbers are unprecedented in the UK.

“To date, in excess of 500 victims have come forward and we have recorded 200 allegations of sexual assault,” a spokesman said.

Seven people have been questioned. Of these six were under arrest. High-profile names arrested in connection with the investigation are PR consultant Max Clifford, comedian Freddie Starr, DJ Dave Lee Travis and former TV producer Wilfred De’Ath, who all deny any wrongdoing. Gary Glitter, who was also arrested, has not yet made a statement.

A man in his 80s was also questioned and a man in his 60s was arrested on Monday.

The BBC has announced two inquiries as a result of the abuse claims and a further review into the current sexual harassment policies at the corporation.

There is a further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dropping of a Newsnight investigation into Savile.

  1. D@GP – before all the hacking stuff came to light and the Leveson enquiry etc. the press actually briefly had the public on side on the topic of Super Injunctions – where public figures take out injunctions which not only stop the press reporting that they’ve done or been accused of something, but also stopping them reporting that the injunction itself has been taken out.

That may or may not answer your question.

  2. The big scandal in England is Jimmy, then we have had a wave of opening the lid on this issue here in Australia over the last 12 months with “celebrities” In America, former child star Corey Feldman revealed in a tv interview in the last year or so that he and Corey Haim were also subjected to abuse and without naming names, said one was a hollywood mogul and that the abuse was rife and one of the biggest issues throughout Hollywood. Hopefully now and 2013 is the time where many who have gotten away with it for so long, will be brought to justice.

  3. BrassEye’s brilliant ‘Paedo-geddon’ special should be re-aired to put this in perspective. Whilst I am horrified at the level of sexual abuse that has been exposed, Chris Morris’s fiction has become reality.

  4. I think aussie media were disgraceful with the stories of an aussie being questioned in relation to this. Not much guessing was needed to work out who it was, especially with the location of this persons address disclosed. Lazy crappy journos

  5. David, can you shed any light on the reason news reports concerning the “Australian icon in his 80’s” (which were all over the media Saturday week ago) just suddenly went totally away?

Don’t tell me it’s the media being responsible as no charges appear to have yet been laid. Like, that’s never stopped them before, has it ?

Just seems strange there’s been a complete blanket thrown over it.

  6. I watched that Louis Theroux with Jimmy Savile the other night.

Wow he was one wierdo. It was also watching it in the context of what we know now and I think it added a major creep factor to a lot of it.

Some of the things he says, when you think of possible context in relation to this….
