Discovery screening Oprah / Lance Armstrong interview simultaneously with US

Discovery will screen Oprah's interview with Lance Armstrong simultaneously with the US, on all 6 of its channels.

2013-01-15_1606Discovery will screen Oprah’s Next Chapter interview with Lance Armstrong simultaneously as it airs in the US on her OWN Network.

So major does Discovery consider the event, it will screen it across all 6 of its channels at the same time: Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Turbo MAX, TLC, Discovery Home & Health and Discovery Science (I’m not quite clear how it fits with Animal Planet for example, but maybe Oprah isn’t telling us something….).

Oprah Winfrey will speak exclusively with Lance Armstrong in his first no-holds-barred interview, “Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong: A Worldwide Exclusive.” Armstrong will address the alleged doping scandal, years of accusations of cheating, and charges of lying about the use of performance-enhancing drugs throughout his cycling career.

In the interview, Winfrey speaks with Armstrong at his home in Austin, Texas, in the only interview since the seven-time Tour de France winner was stripped of his titles and dropped from millions of dollars in endorsement deals after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released an extensive report accusing the renowned cyclist of doping throughout his career. Armstrong was given a lifetime ban from competing professionally. Late last year, Armstrong resigned as chairman of the foundation he created, Livestrong, which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars in the fight against cancer.

Senior Vice President and General Manager, Discovery Networks ANZ, Mandy Pattinson said “We are delighted to be bringing this hugely anticipated interview exclusively to our Australian subscription television audiences at the same time as it is broadcast on the OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in the US.”

“In an Australian television first for Discovery Networks we will be simultaneously broadcasting this special episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter” across all six Discovery Networks Channels; Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Turbo MAX, TLC, Discovery Home & Health and Discovery Science.”

Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong: A Worldwide Exclusive on Friday January 18th at 1pm (AEDT).

  1. It is very unfortunate that Doping has played a major role in one the most difficult sporting events in the world. The general consensus is that a lot of the top level cyclists riders and teams participated in doping to countermeasure the required endurance for the Tour de France race. Additionally, you can say what you want about this arrogant man but you have to acknowledge what his organization (Livedstrong) has accomplished for cancer survivors.

  2. IMO he is a cheat and should be penalised accordingly. All this stupid Oprah crap is to yet again get attention for lying cheating bastards in sport. We’ve seen it all before and people will probably feel sorry for him. I hope they throw the book at him. He doesn’t deserve all this publicity. Wonder how much he is getting paid. Thats my rant over.

As for the 6 channels thats excessive. Will i watch? Yes i will but the fact is the way its happening.

  3. One thing I notice was the footage that has need release (on news services) is not in widescreen, I sure hope its old footage, I mean it’s 2013 and this is not in HD? The quality was very low so maybe it was leaked?

  4. @ J Bar – the two main reasons I can think of is 1) to increase the amount of people who watch it as they aren’t offering any alternatives on the other Discovery-owned channels, and 2) to increase their viewer share for the week.

  5. Oprah now is airing it over two nights and the second night is being shown on Discovery on Saturday here but starts earlier hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/oprah-winfrey-expands-lance-armstrong-412628

  6. For you beautiful people that have Foxtel and are interested the Discovery Channel on Foxtel is showing the oprah windfrey interview ” With The Cheat ” Lance Armstrong at 10am Friday ( I don’t know if Discovery HD is showing it , I haven’t got HD )
I don’t like the guy, and I feel sorry for the people who ever put their trust on him, I’ve always wondered how come he wond 7 times, and it took our own Cadel Evans so many years to win just one, now I know.

  7. For those that do not have Foxtel I forgot to mention that the interview will be simultaneously streamed Live worldwide both nights from Oprah’s website.

To tune in to the live stream you can use this link Oprah.com/lancearmstrong or you can view it from the Oprah.com homepage. She will also be streaming on her facebook account Facebook.com/owntv

  8. The OWN network have confirmed the interview with Armstrong will be covered over two nights (days in our case), so don’t forget to tune in on Saturday as well.

  9. @ Bogues and pdslater – according to the Austar TV guide all channels have regular programming (I’m guessing Foxtel are still being lazy when it comes to their Austar subscrbers even though it’s been over 5 months since their takeover), but Discovery HD has transitioned from offering different content to the main Discovery channel to being a simulcast so I’m sure the interview will be available on Discovery HD.
@ J Bar – Discovery is included in the Starter Pack for both Foxtel and Austar subscribers so all subscribers will be able to watch the interview.
@ Craig – OWN is part-owned by Discovery, so Discovery Australia would have had first dibs on the interview, not giving Foxtel-owned Bio. a chance.

  10. I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns up on FTA in a week or so, just not live this Friday. But like I side before it will be covered by all the news outlets right away, maybe even rolling updates are the 2 hour interview progresses?

It’s a mystery why this is on Discovery, I thought Bio would be more suited to it?

  11. Here we go again, something else I can’t watch. Any chance one of the regular networks will be able to air it once it’s aired on Foxtel? I was hoping it would be on 10 since they used to air her show.
