Slideshow slips into top spot, while Offspring lifts TEN.

Ratings: Seven's new comedy show debuts well and the death of Patrick Reid puts TEN into a competitive position on Wednesday.

2V0A0299_resizeSlapstick comedy and a drama death were the big talking points to emerge from Wednesday, especially on social media, with Slideshow and Offspring both winning their timeslots.

Seven’s new Slideshow was the #1 show of the night with an impressive 1.3m viewers. There were plenty of instant fans on Twitter, although it did appear to polarise some who couldn’t see what all the fuss was about.

Meanwhile the death of Patrick on Offspring outranked it on Twitter, trending worldwide last night. While OzTAM is where it counts the show still drew in 1.06m viewers, enough to win its timeslot. It was good to see TEN have a competitive night, but Seven took victory.

Seven network was 28.2% then Nine 24.7%, TEN 23.4%, ABC 18.4% and SBS 5.3%.

Following Slideshow for Seven was Seven News (1.22m), Today Tonight (1.05m), Home and Away (904,000), Criminal Minds (812,000), Deal or No Deal (581,000) and The Mole (340,000).

Nine News (1.28m) was best for and A Current Affair (1.03m), Big Brother slipped to 754,000, then Hot Seat (695,000), Arrow (645,000) and Embarrassing Bodies (449,000).

Offspring (1.06m) had its best numbers all season and was still sitting at #1 on Twitter in Australia this morning.  TEN had a competitive night thanks also to MasterChef Australia (933,000), TEN News (673,000), The Project (637,000) and a rise for This Week Live (620,000) which won its timeslot. The show featured Rove as “an upgraded” Tommy Little guest host, although he was almost at risk of taking over the show in only its third week. The Simpsons was 388,000.

ABC News (940,000) led ABC1 then Qi (800,000), 7:30 (797,000) a repeat of Adam Hills Tonight (490,000), Wednesday Night Fever (398,000) and Restoration Man (327,000).

On SBS ONE it was Australia with Simon Reeve (366,000), Predators in Your Backyard (250,000), World News Australia (165,000) and The Killing (113,000).

The bunny bit into multichannels with Peter Rabbit at 335,000.

  1. This is what happens when people who have been trained on shows like BB return to become senior staff.. not experienced enough to make good TV that rates

  2. R.I.P Big Brother.

I’m a huge fan but I don’t even like it this year. It’s a chore to watch the episodes. Hope it’s canceled and Ten bring it back a few years time in it’s true and original format. Whatever.

    *crying*

  3. Thanks to Offspring, Channel 10 squeaked into 2nd place for the night. How long has it been since that last happened?

QI started late last night so I decided to catch a couple of minutes of SlideShow. They were doing a kind of speed charades on a flat stage. Didn’t see any sliding so I’m guessing that that’s only part of the show even tho’ it’s the bit that Seven have been selling.

Anyway, it was dull television. Even the laughter of the participants seemed forced. Like others I’m predicting a drop in ratings next week with a further drop the week after.

  4. I was a doubter about Slideshow. Didn’t watch as I can’t stand Grant Denyer. Still think that it will disappear. Everyone I know who watched said they wished they hadn’t.
MasterChef deserved good figures as last night was a cracker of an episode.
Big Brother casting director needs to be fired ASAP. Too many Princesses & media types this year makes for dull viewing.

  5. Hi David.

Do you know if the numbers for BB was across the whole 90 mins? Or did they code ‘Confidential’ separate from the 60min daily show. If so does that mean confidential was outside the top 20 ?

  6. @ditto…I doubt 7 care. An elderly Aunt is still a viewer. I (29yo) was there too laughing my head off…. with my cousin, who is 13- also laughing.

It brought a family together through laughter and we need more shows like this.. simple fun!

  7. @James and Pete. In relation to Nine News and Seven News being neck and neck last night; it was a case of Nine’s numbers being down on average rather than Mark Ferguson causing the numbers to rise.

  8. BB now well below Celebrity splash figures before it was bumped, and not far off The Mole. future isn’t looking good.

a very good premiere for SS but I agree it seems very prone to drop fast. I think offspring could have expected a bit more, PTTR increased 700k in one week for Mel’s death. MC finally gets a decent number for the ten execs to talk about for the rest of the year allowing them to ignore the other 99% of the episodes’ ratings. but This Week Live is showing genuine potential.

  9. @pete while they are neck and neck, seven news hasn’t actually increased its numbers overall. But nine has dropped. I say elevation fatigue has already set in.

And all of a sudden after a bad week last week, sunrise is smashing the last few days.

  10. This Week Live was hilarious last night. Rove gave the panel a well needed lift and Matt Lucas was great. That Tommy Little bloke wasn’t missed if you ask me. First two weeks seemed fake and forced. It sure makes a difference when you have someone with the experience of Rove and I’m not even a great fan of him.

  11. Good to see some nights shake up the ratings a bit.
I am glad Offspring had good numbers, shame the promos couldn’t have been more cryptic. Even though I don’t watch MC, glad 10 had a good night. I didn’t watch slide show, but even comedy in all its forms is needed.
9 slipped. Arrow has dropped, are they its lowest numbers now? I am still enjoying it!
BB I caught a snippet from my PVR and it doesn’t surprise me with the 20 seconds I saw, why it isn’t rating!

  12. Amazing night for numbers whichever way you look at it. Masterchef big increase, Big Brother big drop, Slide Show huge (how come?).

Anybody know why Seven and Nine news in Sydney have been neck and neck over the past few nights when Seven have been thrashed for all of this year by Nine? TT beat ACA in Sydney also which is unheard of.

  13. Before all the negative nancys start their rant over the numbers for Slide Show, let me just say that when i was sitting their with my elderly aunt last night and watched the tears roll down her face from laughing so hard, to me it became a winner. So what if the vision showed the audience sitting dead still but the audio had them in stitches, it was a little bit of fun, made me smile, made us laugh and that to me is a hit show.
