Report: David Leckie to ‘overhaul’ Seven News

Former Seven CEO David Leckie has been hired to overhaul Seven News, in the battle against Nine.

sevenncFormer Seven CEO David Leckie has been hired to overhaul Seven News according to media reports today.

News Corp cites a three year $3 million contract for the exec who retired as Seven boss in late 2011. But he has maintained a role as executive director of media at Seven Group Holdings.

The Sunday Telegraph reports Kerry Stokes has gone on a contract-signing crusade to address ratings, but that the ’63-year-old’s appointment is seen as a slap in the face to Seven’s news director, Rob Raschke.’

Seven has improved its national news numbers in recent weeks but still trails Nine News overall this year.

  1. I find both 7 and Nine News to be clones of each other. Compared to the Brian years they are NewsLite. They are both so dumbed down that I wait for ABC News now.

  2. The biggest problem with Seven News is that all the journos look like they’ve just come out of school. Where did all the experience go? I’m not advocating that News should be presented by old fuddy-duddys, but why this sudden pre-occupation with journos in their twenties? Was it purely their higher-cost that drove all the experience away?

Seven News needs a good overhaul and Leckie is the man for the job.

Additionally, the young sports reporter on Sky News on Saturday Night presented herself with enormous surety yet stumbled, mispronounced or lost her place in virtually every single intro to each story. I kept watching in disbelief.

  3. Um so why does Seven news usually win the ratings against Nine news. Nine news has only been winning at the moment because of The Voice.

  4. In Brisbane they lost ground because they moved Kay and Rod to the weekends. Melissa and Andrew are better presenters than Sharyn and Bill, it’s that simple. Sharyn comes across as very artificial and therefore not believable. I’m sure she’s a nice person but lacks Melissa’s force in delivery.
All hail the queen of Brisbane news….. Queen Kay

  5. I reckon Raschke (and possibly senior news management in Syd/Bris/Melb, currently answerable to Raschke) will all be under the Leckie microscope.

I will not be surprised at all if Seven goes back to producing 1/2 hour bulletins/TT on the east coast by the end of 2014.
