Family Feud simulcast to continue next week

No sign of single channel numbers anytime soon, as TEN continues its game show simulcast into next week.

2014-06-25_1725TEN is set to continue its simulcasting of Family Feud into a second week.

From Monday it will air at 6pm on both TEN and ELEVEN. On ONE COPS will screen from Monday – Wednesday with the Commonwealth Games screening from Thursday night.

TEN’s launch of Family Feud has caused much discussion in the industry because its ratings, as high as 719,000 cleverly merges all three channels into a single number (OzTAM allows this when the programme is simulcast in the same timeslot). But it also means we are unable to see how it is performing on the primary channel, for direct comparisons with other channels.

While some have suggested the network is fudging the figures, others have acknowledged it as an astute way to launch a new series. But on Wednesday the show could not retain its TEN Eyewitness News numbers into Family Feud despite adding two extra channels.

TEN has confirmed to TV Tonight it will continue the simulcasting into next week “as we review and analyse the strategy.”

Programming Chief Beverley McGarvey said in a statement, “Network Ten has always been known for its innovation. The innovative scheduling of Family Feud this week at the same time across our three broadcast channels gives us a way to bring this exciting new show to as many people as possible. We are very pleased with the initial ratings for Family Feud. It is a good start. We have also had very positive feedback from advertisers and agencies about the show and our innovative scheduling of it.”

  1. A clever strategy by the Ten Network that others will follow. But spamming only lasts for so long and is pretty worthless if the content doesn’t live up to the hype. Ten needs to get back to basics and give viewers what they can’t live without, stuff that they will want to log into and view live on-line, warts and all content with a risky twist, when the main content is not broadcasting…. think about this Ten… it’s not too hard lol ABCNews24 is leading the way in this department.

  2. The worst thing of all is…is appears to me…FF is not being broadcast on glorious HD on One…..That was my dream….FF in HD…Wow!

    I’m shattered!

  3. It’s a game show not a drama where you can get sucked in by a compelling storyline if they get your eyeballs for a bit. I was watching 90210 in that slot, now I am avoiding it like the plague. Game shows for me are for when I’m bored & can’t be bothered finding something better to watch, not for religious everyday viewing.

  4. 11 flagged this on last Friday’s ep of BH90210.

There was a ticker along the bottom saying BH would be off for 2 weeks (didn’t say why though).

I *think* I can hold out another week, it’ll be tricky though 🙂

  5. @Lyn: I too find it annoying that Neighbours starts 5 mins later now. I usually PVR it and watch it at 6:45pm, but now I have 5 mins of trash to fast forward through at the start.

Additionally, I find the major prize on Family Feud and odd choice, being a car. What is the point of that, it means the winning family will have to sell it in order to share some money. No family member will be happy to say ‘oh, no, please you have the car and I’ll have nothing’.

  6. I don’t see the point in it being on 10 & 11!
I watch “Neighbours” on 11, but when I switch over, there is “Family Feud” which makes “The Couch” late, which makes “Neighbours” late!
    Annoying!

  7. Ten need this to work so one week or even two or three to bed down a new, important show for them makes good sense. Christ, if people are that impatient to see centuries old episodes of 90210, they can always buy the DVDs.

  8. @greyghost – I can only assume that you’re not paying much attention when you’re channel surfing. SBS1, SBS2, and NITV all have different content. Perhaps you’re getting confused with channel 30 which is an HD stream of SBS1?

  9. i dont know why people are mad on 10 for running a programme across 3 stations, SBS do it all the time.
Every time i channel surf theres the same show across all SBS stations.

  10. This “innovative scheduling” that ten is apparently well-known for, you mean stuff like inserting one reality show into the final of another?

I’m with JoshS, someone else needs to write Beverley’s lines. Using “innovation”/”innovative” three times in one paragraph does smack of desperation, both with regard to the tactic itself and with trying to convince people that Beverley really does know what she’s doing.

I would suggest that the decision to extend this experiment for another week has only been taken because FF has now dropped out of the Top 20 despite no changes to its competition, and this will delay letting us see what the real single-channel ratings are.

  11. David, what do you think would be a pass mark for FF once it starts only airing on Ten? I’m thinking if the News can pull around 700k then 450-500k for FF would be acceptable given the competition.

  12. Angry that FF will clog Eleven as well for another week. Surely a sign that it is not performing. Ten is not helping itself at all.
A dumb idea with the most unpopular person on TV.
Grant it is time to go.

    1. I’m happy to report Primary channel numbers, but I’m afraid it’s time to stop reporting simulcast numbers as it only encourages this kind of behaviour. It’s not what our multichannels are there for. OzTAM rankings will continue to be published but I will continue to focus on Primary channel results in reportage.

  13. This s idiotic. Why are they broadcasting the same content on both of their SD channels?

If they simulcast some of their primary channel content on ONE, at least we’d have a chance to see some of their content in HD.

  14. Having the show on 3 channels wont make me any more or less likely to watch. I would guess that it might be getting an extra 100,000-200,000 viewers with the multichannels.

  15. Beverly says ‘innovative’ several times there.

It’s a very fine line between ‘innovative’ and ‘desperate tricks’.

Guess which side TEN is on.

  16. I think they risk some public backlash and fatigue by doing it a second week. One week was very smart. And by next week when Cops and 90210 were back people would have forgiven and forgot.

2 weeks you may start to annoy people. Ten is in a fragile place. They are on a mini-roll – I don’t think they can risk pissing people off right now.

That said – do the same ads run on all 3 networks? If so – aren’t they missing out on selling advertising to additional advertisers thus missing revenue.?

    Not sure how it works.

If I were Ten I would be focusing on the show itself and content and getting that right, and incentivise people to watch. Not just ttrick them into it or boost headline numbers.
