Oh the pain... Cult 60s sci-fi could be getting a new version.

A new version of Lost in Space is reportedly in development, with Legendary TV studio.

Deadline reports Dracula Untold writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have signed on to write the adaptation and will executive produce with Kevin Burns of Synthesis Entertainment, who owns the original rights.

Legendary has produced feature films as Godzilla, Pacific Rim, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hangover.

The original series aired for three seasons from 1965 and ran for 83 episodes. In syndication the series has remained a cult classic.

A 1998 film version starred William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Gary Oldman and Matt LeBlanc but was not well received.

  1. The camp elements of Lost In Space were at least 60% accidental and due to the budget constraints – Irwin Allen being a notorious tightwad. TV series that set out to be deliberately camp or tongue-in-cheek very rarely succeed.

  2. It has to be remembered that the original series started out being played as a straight drama=the campiness was later, helped by the change to colour filming in the second season. If some new version was made, like most modern TV, if it didn’t get an audience immediately , it wouldn’t last more than a few eps before cancellation.

  3. Would love to see a remake of Lost In Space. It would definitely have to have the same tongue in cheek campness of the original for it to succeed though.
I agree David. The Brady Bunch Movie remakes got it so right where most of the other remakes have failed miserably.
I remember being so excited when I heard Bewitched was being done again but was very disappointed in how bad it was. Same with the Land Of The Lost remake. Please keep Will Ferrell away from these sorts of projects in the future.

  4. Brad33. I agree. All these re inventions of old TV shows like Batman and Robin, Superman and Lost in space, they all lost the “camp” element. #bringbackthecamp

  5. hands down my absolute favourite in this genre of TV shows from the 60’s… seen every episode many, many, many times and I’m still watching it on Foxtel!… The movie re-make was terrible…. It needs “camp” to revive it successfully..

  6. There was actually a pilot for a tv series remake back around 2000. Pretty sure it was directed by John Woo but it was cancelled. The pilot is still on YouTube.

  7. I recall reading about a previous attempt to re-boot the series, but it never got past the pilot stage. I hope this one does. I just hope they don’t bring back Doctor Smith, the focus on him destroyed any chance of decent story lines. It just got sillier and sillier the longer it went on, which may have contributed to its downfall.

  8. They need to keep it like the original if they want it to be successful, perhaps use one of the kids to play the parts of the parents, or Dr Smith,
The movie was a flop because as usual they tried to improve on the original which you can’t do.
