  1. I just recieved an offer this morning from Stan to trial their service for a free month.
I currently use Netflix from the U.S. and have done so for over a year. Just going on early impressions I feel Stan is a good companion to Netflix but will not replace it for me. I am curious what the local Netflix will be like but I remain sceptical.
melmac , you were wondering about data well I am with Optus and pay $100 a month for unlimited broadband. It may seem a lot but in my household we have two adults and two teens who are all heavy data users. We also have the high speed data pack.
Picture from Netflix U.S. is always HD.

  2. I can’t see any serious money being made from these iptv services until Australias Internet improves to a standard where they can support them for more of the population. I know many many people whos current connection would not be fast enough to watch without frustration. Not to mention quota issues are any of the new service in bed with providers yet? ie do any have a deal where what is streamed does not count towards your ISP quota

  3. The content that Stan or Presto have advertised so far isn’t that appealing. Still waiting to hear what Netflix is offering.

No windows phone app available for presto either.

  4. I hope they can add Game of Thrones (including the upcoming season 5)

The moment they do consider me signed up. (Even when if I’ve already got Stan and Netflix)

  5. Just looking at the full TV show list, Presto doesn’t particularly interest me.

A lot of the foreign shows I can get on US Netflix. As for the Australian shows, there’s some non-exclusive ABC shows, which can be seen on the cheaper Stan.

Plus I’ve never really been much of a Channel Seven viewer, so the exclusive (7 in-house) Australian dramas won’t get me signing up.

Stan is looking like the pick of the Australian VOD services. Originally, I was sceptical of the Nine/Fairfax StreamCo, but preliminary info on their website shows they have really signed some pretty good content, both local and international.

  6. yes not only have alot of these been available on FTA, they’ve been on endless repeats! eg Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Cheers, Frost, All Saints & more. But it could be a cheap option for those who have not seen some paytv only shows.

Obviously they are being pretty smart with the pricing, there might be people who subsribe because its so cheap even if they don’t watch alot of the shows. i tend to think the sort of people wanting this catch up service would rather watch it on tv though.

  7. I have current Full foxtel. Haven’t see the full slate of episdoes of shows that Presto is offering. Could be much easier as recording some of them to the IQ. Also I would rather stream than download which can also be done on the IQ.

  8. Presto appears to be a decent service for us here in Australia (and their library is impressive despite no new content), but the simple fact is these services (as long as the existing networks are involved) will never ever be as good as they could be because they have the “ancient” traditional broadcasting models to protect. Case in point – can’t watch on an actual TV!

  9. The success or failure of these online subscription services will be in the pricing not just the content although that is important. Apart from the HBO content the rest can be seen on FTA TV or their catchup services so its not as impressive as some think. Hopefully we can access all of the episodes not just from 1 season if we can then the 10 oe 15 dollars will be worth it because atm we can pick what episodes to watch from FTA catchup services. 7&FOXtel need to get better content if they can than PrestoTV will be more atractive.

  10. @Tex, interesting bit of info there. It’s going to be hard to go past Netflix on Apple TV – a lot of content in Dolby surround and great definition (on the US version anyway).

  11. cnrmlj: “Also, no way to watch it on my tv easily.”

Since Google Chromecast is mentioned, presumably you can watch on TV using the Google Chromecast HDMI dongle.

Unfortunately, Chromecast’s dirty little secret is the dongle can’t play 25/50fps content (i.e. the Aus TV standards) natively – it only outputs at 30/60fps (i.e. the US standards). While TVs should handle that OK, the forced 25/50 -> 30/60 conversion makes anything with motion become a horrible juddery mess.

  12. Presumably this is aimed at people who have just discovered that they missed something great when it was previously on and haven’t gotten around to buying the boxed set. Everything they’re offering that I would be interested in I have already seen.

6120 episodes of Home And Away? Yes, that will be the killer content that will get everybody to subscribe.

  13. I’ve seen the full list of programmes on Presto’s website-very undrwhelming to say the least. It’s all old shows, many of which have been shown on free to air tv anyway.Hopefully Stan and Netflix will come up with a more extensive range of titles,or i won’t be tempted by any of them

  14. Presto should add the 6120 episodes of Home And Away, that would be awesome.
7TWO is currently up to episode 1305 but with only 1 episode a day it is slow going

  15. None of this really excites me.
Several of the titles mentioned are already available on Foxtel’s Boxsets.
Don’t think I will add more to my current financial outlay for this.
However, good on them for getting the head start on the others.

  16. No mention of it being in high definition so assume it is only in FTA standard definition. Also, no way to watch it on my tv easily. Sounds like typical over priced inferior service compared to others that are available for purchase. #Netflix #Hulu #AppleTV #HD

  17. Presto will be $15, Stan $10 and Netflix $10.
Why do fox/seven think we will pay more for their service?
Also is presto available to Foxtel subscribers or an additional cost? How does it compared to “on demand”?
