Next week ABC2 screens Our Gay Wedding: The Musical, a same-sex wedding between two men who staged the whole thing as, yep, a musical.

But there was a little bit of celebrity help with Stephen Fry introducing and commentateing on the service plus performances, messages and appearances from Olivia Newton John, The Feeling, Boy George, Will Young, West End leading lady Hannah Waddingham, Paul O’Grady, and Jon Snow.

On Saturday 29th March 2014, same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales and to mark this historic milestone, you get a front row seat at one of the first gay weddings to take place.

But this was to be an extraordinary ceremony in more ways than one.

Grooms Benjamin Till and Nathan Taylor wrote and staged their entire wedding as a musical – with sung vows, sung readings and show-stopping ensembles featuring the whole congregation of family, friends and special guests including a heartfelt duet from the grooms’ mums.

There were witty musical takes on the standard conventions of wedding ceremony, as well as stark reminders of the historical journey of the couple to that point, tributes to the other gay and lesbian couples getting married at the first opportunity and a reminder of the struggles faced by those in countries where homosexuality is still a crime and even a death sentence.

9:30pm Wednesday ABC2.

  1. OMG! I think they put the “cause” back a few years!
I found it to be lame and self indulgent. Just basically painful! Was it meant to be a joke?
The only thing that impressed me was Andy Bell from Erasure singing “A Little Respect” while they showed how far our community has come legally sinfe the 50’s.
For two ABBA Fans, these guys learned very little from those masters about writing good songs and strong musicals … 🙁
