Two helicopters have collided mid-air in Argentina while filming for a French reality series, killing 10 people.

Police said the victims were eight French nationals and two Argentine pilots.

Amongst the dead were French sports stars champion sailor Florence Arthaud, 57, Olympic gold-medal swimmer Camille Muffat, 25, and Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine, 28 and four members of the production staff.

The two helicopters were filming the survival series Dropped when they crashed into each other in the rugged mountains of La Rioja province, around 1,100 kilometres north of the capital Buenos Aires. Shooting began in late February in Ushuaia, at the southern tip of South America in the glacial landscape of Patagonia.

La Rioja provincial government spokesman Horacio Alarcon said, “Apparently, the two helicopters collided as they were filming. There are no survivors.”

Dropped, which was to air on French television channel TF1, involved eight sports stars being dropped into inhospitable environments for an adventure and survival-themed reality show.

Other stars participating in the show were swimmer Alain Bernard, cyclist Jeannie Longo, footballer Sylvain Wiltord, snowboarder Anne-Flore Marxer, and figure skater Philippe Candeloro, but were not involved in the accident.

  1. Forget about the Reality Show being filmed how can 2 helicopters collide, in the middle of nowhere, what were they doing flying so close together is the story not what they were filming.

  2. and while this is very sad news…..there will be somewhere an aussie tv exec thinking that this could be ratings gold giving them a real edge over the competition…..lets face it some of them milked the horror of the Lindt cafe attack for all it was worth

      1. I was being somewhat cynical of the lengths tv execs will go to for a ratings grab in this country.Remember the awful ch7 logo flashing over live feeds from the venue, I know of no other country in the world that would put such an abysmal watermark across such a potential tragic event. So I was just pushing the boundaries of what an exec ‘might’ think for one of their own shows. However this is a very sad day for France and also Argentina

  3. What a dreadful waste of people’s lives!
Dying while filming reality rubbish, how sad is that?
I suppose they went to their deaths willingly, but even so…..
