ABC2 will screen 2013 documentary In Bob We Trust, in which Father Bob Maguire battled the Catholic Church to keep his church doors open in South Melbourne.
For 40 years Catholic priest Father Bob Maguire fought courageously to protect the bereft and abandoned of his parish, the poor and disadvantaged, including those who were not Catholics themselves.
He opened the doors to his parish, his presbytery, and his own pockets to them. Since 2002 he has weathered many disciplinary measures from the Church hierarchy due to his actions, fighting back with a healthy disregard for authority.
With an insightful wit he becomes a tireless outspoken advocate for justice for the powerless and a provocateur of conscience. In 2012 he was forcibly retired and evicted by his Archbishop. Fr. Bob, now in his late 70’s, with the tenacious belief that he is here to help, continues to fight to be effective, to be provocative and to never say die.
Sunday July 19 8:30pm on ABC2.

Worth watching for the opening sequence alone.
I’m a Catholic so I know I shall enjoy this.
I am an Atheist, but respect Father Bob, so I too will enjoy this doco.
You’re not the only one, a lot of respect for Father Bob. More like Father Bob and less Cardinal Pells please.
My local library has the DVD. Have borrowed it several times. Worthwhile watch.
I always wanted to see this as I like Father Bob on the Project and Triple J. The time is great as Sunday evening is when he would on the radio if he and John Safran were not on holidays.
Oops. “Sunday evening is when he would be on the radio” is what I meant to have posted.
