Here’s a trailer for HBO’s new miniseries Show Me a Hero, based on the book by Lisa Belkin.

It centres on a middle-class neighborhood’s resistance to a public housing development in Yonkers, NY, and how these tensions affected the city as a whole.

The six part miniseries was written by David Simon and William F. Zorzi and premieres in the US in August.

Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder and Jim Belushi all co-star.

    1. They were just trying to protect their property values (which all of their wealth is tied up in) from a court ordered 1980s housing development (and from the high inner-city crime of the 70s and 80s in NY). The court decision was to punish the wealthy for economic and hence racial segregation (two of the sites selected were next door to councillors who had voted against it).

The decision was appeal and lost. The wealthy fled to the suburbs, crime was reduced, property prices skyrocketed, and apartments for wealthy professionals took over the inner-city. And 30 years later the US is more economically, and hence racially, segregated than it was in the 60s. Which is a greater unintended consequence that the one Simon will rail against.
