Jenna Coleman will depart Doctor Who during the upcoming season, after 3 years as companion Clara Oswald.

The BBC has confirmed her exit, but not revealed exactly when she leaves nor how will she part company with the Doctor.

Jenna Coleman made her debut in the UK in September, 2012 as Oswin Oswald in Asylum of the Daleks, alongside Matt Smith’s Doctor. She returned on Christmas Day of that year, playing Clara and remained with the Eleventh Doctor from the following episode, The Bells of Saint John, onwards. She has stayed on board the TARDIS for all of Peter Capaldi’s episodes to date.

After filming for the last series finished, Capaldi commented, “Jenna has been absolutely brilliant. I think she’s wonderful in the show, and she’s my favourite companion.”

Coleman has been confirmed for the lead role in ITV’s upcoming new drama Victoria.

“I am delighted to be cast as Queen Victoria in this ambitious drama of her life,” she said in a statement. “She is a vivid, strong, inspirational and utterly fascinating woman in British history and I can’t wait to tell her story.”

Doctor Who begins tomorrow on ABC.

  1. Never much liked her but she was better than Karen Gillan.
I think Lenora Crichlow would make a good female companion.
But how about a male companion for a change?
Someone like Russell Tovey or Damien Malony.

  2. Mac, it’s more they don’t want to be typecast or when they get a higher profile they flick Dr Who, I think Jemma wanted a lot of storylines considering the show became about Clara so who knows that direction may have changed

      1. It’s not the actresses fault – I think she’s better than she’s generally given credit for, and certainly better than the part she’s been asked to play.

Poor & inconsistent characterisation, terrible story “ideas”, even worse writing, and NuWho’s repeated “build a character/storyline up as the most X thing ever, then give that character/storyline a stupid/boring/pointless explanation” instead of ‘plot’, resulted in a mystery “Impossible Girl” who was neither particularly mysterious nor, as it turned out, particularly impossible…

  3. I’m pretty devo about this but i knew it would come sometime and 3 years is pretty great for a companion but she IS impossible girl! I love Clara and Jenna plays her so well. She’s my favourite companion just ahead of Amy. Based on the titles of the new season it could be ep 5 that she exits. That’s so early on in the season. 🙁 Now the question of who will be the new companion. Hmm.

    1. My feeling is we might see the Clara story come full circle with Clara converted into a Dalek, this is just pure speculation based on seeing the first ep of the new series this morning.

  4. I must admit I’m only new to Doctor Who in the last few years, so I’m no expert, but to me she’s never seemed right with Capaldi. I don’t mind her personally, I just feel like there’s a much better suited match somewhere out there for him that will really lift the show.
