Rumour: Seven to launch movie channel?

Seven's newest channel will launch in February -but guesses continue on the content.

Seven’s newest channel is set to launch in February.

While there are whispers of a possible movie channel, the network remains tight-lipped on the content and branding.

Network Director of Programming Angus Ross confirmed to TV Tonight, “We are launching a new channel in February and things will be announced soon.”

Nine recently launched lifestyle channel 9Life while SBS has added its Food Network.

Having a fourth channel has no doubt helped Nine’s summer share.

With Seven launching a fourth entertainment channel, attention will surely to TEN and whether it plans to match its competition.

  1. HI all.
The new channel will be 7HD.
They have no choice but to do this….this is because 9 has a HD channel.
The quality of the 9 HD channel is fantastic as it is 1920×1080 and not 1440×1080.
More and more viewers are wanting to watch content in HD.
Just look at the content available online.. you can watch it in HD or 4k!

9 is in a great position this year!
This first week of aussie Free to air TV is going to be an exciting one. so much variety and will set the tone for the year ahead.. ch10 will perform much much better in 2016. and I have a feeling ch10 may take 2nd place at the end of 2016 rating year. but who will take 1st place?? it will be either 9 or 7!

    Let the fun begin 🙂

  2. I think they should do a sports channel. They have AFL, Horse Racing, Tennis, NFL already. Surely their is content from Sports like the NBA, NHL, MLB for instance that Foxtels ESPN doesn’t air that they could aquire. I’m a movie buff but just don’t seeing it be that successful. I mean would 7 just show movies that they say show as the Midday movie which they show every weekday. Or will it be other content.

  3. I would rather they just bring out a top quality MPEG4 HD channel version of their primary channel instead.

I don’t think adding 9Life did much for the visual quality of the rest of Channel 9, the bandwidth is being stretched too thin.
If they did a movie only channel, it would need to be in SD which would be awful, so I don’t see the point.

If I was them (which granted I am not, I don’t know their numbers or need to care about shareholders), I would focus on 7HD and work on revamping 7TWO, then try to keep the visuals on their channels as best as they possibly can.

If they do feel the need to add a brand new channel, hopefully they’ll at least get rid of their shopping channels to get back some bandwidth.

  4. couldn’t 7two act as a movie channel? they need a rebranding anyway, I’m sure people watch those British shows they play but surely with the new ratings timeslots for M rated shows being allowed to be moved forward to 7:30 they could play them there?

say are lifestyle, reality and British shows from 6-8:30 and from 8:30 onwards show movies every night till late. they can show MA movies now so the earlier they start the more they can fit in. if they finish at say 12:30 they can put more Brit shows on.

coming up with a schedule ain’t hard, there’s no need for a new channel just for movies. and if it happens to be a movie channel on 76, at least make it a channel that has other content like old crime shows, old sci-fi like Sliders, Quantum Leap and old sitcoms that 7two used to air like Alf, Step by Step, Growing Pains and so on… at least during the day. can’t imagine they…

  5. I don’t know anywhere in the world where an ad supported movie channel works?

The rights to buying movies is expensive and the amount of advertising you must place in the movies to monetize that sort of content is huge

Not a great user experience when you can get Presto Netflix or Foxtel movies with no commercials

    1. Film4 here in the UK switched from a premium subscription model to free to air about a decade ago here and is still going strong, though the HD version is currently only available with a Sky or Virgin subscription, though C4 have invested in the capacity so they could take it HD on Freeview once current deals expire. C4 though did have to push the regulator to change the rules so ads could air every 30 minutes during movies rather than every 45 minutes as previously.

We also have at least three other movie channels on Freeview here.

  6. Who ever says movies don’t rate on FTA need to consider the fact that movies airing on digital channels tend to attract decent shares – if you look at GO!, it is for the most part made of movies and the movies replaced reality and themed nights the channel first started with back in 2009.

Regardless of DVDs and other sources, people still seem to watch movies on FTA- they’ll never get the huge audiences that the networks need on main channels, but they do well enough on multis.

If this rumour is true this is good news that Seven won’t copy Nine and do a lifestyle based channel – but lets hope they have enough content to not have to repeat the same movies every three months.

  7. Who needs Foxtel when you have so many free to air channels and Netflix or Stan for 9 dollars a month. It used to grind my gears that Foxtel would charge so much money and then run ads as well. Foxtel had no competition so they had the run of the market and charged like a wounded bull. Never had Foxtel never will buy it.

  8. I really want a classics channel consisting of old sitcoms, crime shows and movies. not just movies on their own. FTA need something like that. it’s something different, GO pretty much have movies covered… even taking movies from other channels. ONE could act as a movie channel, from 8:30 and have other shows on before then.

  9. Long movies full of ads, that people had already seen at the cinema, on DVD or cable (and now streaming) were the first thing that viewer stopped watching live. Seven does have output deals still running with Universal, ABC/Disney & Sony that could provide cheap content for it.

Lifestyle and Sport (major events) are what people are watching these days. Seven is promoting 72 as a UK content dominated channel and 73 as young male channel in their 2016 promos.
