How to watch TEN HD

TEN becomes the second commercial network to switch its primary channel to HD.

ten hd

TEN will switch on TEN HD today at 3pm AEDT on Channel 13.

The channel uses MPEG4 technology meaning some older sets may not be able to access the channel, but an SD simulcast will remain on Channel 10.

TEN HD will be available in metro markets in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and the Gold Coast plus overlap markets, where TEN and Southern Cross signals overlap, eg, Wollongong and Gosford. Southern Cross is not planning to launch TEN HD in the markets it covers meaning other regional viewers will miss out for now.

It will be available to Foxtel cable subscribers, but not satellite subscribers.

  1. Madam Secretary last night on TEN HD definitely wasn’t in HD – the Ten HD logo was clear and in HD – suggest Ten possibly have SD copies for most of their shows to save on the expense of HD copies.

Whereas Nine – even after GEM launched – had done everything HD – they just couldn’t broadcast it until late Nov last year.

  2. 10HD is up on foxtel cable. melbourne this morning, however the epg is not at the moment. I guess foxtel are still working on this part of the upgrade.

    1. 10HD is not on Foxtel if you receive it via satellite dish. Not that I care very much as the only show I watch on TEN is Family Feud and I don’t need to see Grant Denyer in high definition to enjoy it.

        1. Yes David, I re-read that and you’re right. Thanks.
On another matter can you find out how much longer WIN’s channel 82 (GEM) will be transmitted in an incorrect aspect ratio. I’m on the Sunshine Coast but I assume this problem is Australia wide. Luckily, by a quirk of fate, my TV picks up the Brisbane GEM (Channel 92) with which there is no problem

  3. Ten HD in Melbourne is does not look full HD. 9HD is a much superior picture. The Ten news Graphics are not awful. 9HD graphics are so clean and sharp. The Project pre recorded segments are obvious now as they are pourer quality. Ten have a bit of work to do.

  4. I’d assume they ended up using 13 instead of 12 as they have probably earmarked 12 for a new channel, should they go ahead with it. TWELVE anyone?

  5. David, any reason why foxtel doesn’t have the 10HD as yet? Anyone know if it is a bit of a technical thing for foxtel and will probably happen in the early hours of Thursday Morning?

      1. Thanks, least I will be able to watch S6 of Homeland later on this year in HD(unless this is heading to Stan- where I will still be able to watch in HD, minus ads and watermark 😛 )

  6. Glad to see TEN-HD is up & running on channel 13 in Melbourne. I can now watch Modern Family in HD on Sunday nights & NCIS on Tuesday nights.

  7. Ten minutes late. 3.10pm it happened…… They even run over time with a test patten!

But picture looks great….even if it is Judge Judy!

Very low key. No fanfare. Not much promotion prior. Given Ten have decided to invest in HD rather than another channel you would think they would be wanting to promote it and get people watching to boost numbers.

  8. “TEN becomes the second commercial network to switch its primary channel to HD.”

Didn’t Seven change to HD only 3 days ago on Sunday with the introduction of 7flix?

  9. I doubt southern cross will do anything, the reach rule is about to be revoked and their deal with 10 expires around June/July same time that the 9/win deal expires. 9 will merge with SC and win will be left to do a deal with 10

  10. Living on The Sunshine Coast I won’t be watching Ten HD, not yet anyway. But I would like to watch WIN’s GEM channel. Since yesterday GEM has been transmitted in an incorrect aspect ratio, squeezing everything into the middle of the screen with black strips down each side,
    Anyone know what’s going on?
It was fine until WIN introduced WIN HD yesterday on GEM’s former channel 80.

  11. Have no fear regional viewers.. Southern Cross Media are already talking to TEN about selling its regional TV assets subject to legislative changes in media ownership passing the Parliament.

All going well, you should have TEN HD before the end of the year!

  12. once again, those of us in regional areas or Sat only miss out. By my estimation, I am currently missing 2 nine channels, 2 ten channels, and an SBS channel. Even if I got foxtel I wouldnt have access. Why do regional/rural always get the raw deal?

    1. In Tasmania?
We have all the SBS channels.
Only channels I can think of we are missing are Ten HD and 7flix. Home shopping channels shouldn’t count!!

  13. Shrugs shoulders. If viewers don’t watch Ten in SD will HD make any difference? Family Feud simulcast on 4 channels? Foxtel had better give Ten some sporting content or this change means nothing.

  14. I have to say I hope channel ten fix ONE. The channels programming has become so uninspiring. I mean old episode of mash, hogans Heros and really old shows and American factual shows.

It’s like one has become channel tens extra channel for sports but other times it might as well be a test pattern.

    1. I agree. TEN should launch a new multichannel that contains classic comedies. Put Hogans Heroes, Mash, onto the new channel. And that includes 11. Fix up the 10am-6pm programming. Put more kids shows on 11. That will make children more entertained.

  15. “TEN becomes the second commercial network to switch its primary channel to HD.”

They didn’t switch their primary channel to HD at all. 10 is still broadcasting in SD as their primary channel and on the 10 LCN while HD is on 13. All they did was reintroduce the simulcast they took away.

  16. So today another bunch of people will start whining about how their you beaut tv from 10 years ago isn’t working properly on this channel.

  17. It’s funny we have come to the same point we started with i.e. full circle. What a joke. Its funny on NineHD last night they aired King of Comedy and most of the programs skits were black and white or early colour. Seriously they can’t air a more modern program on HD TV?
