BBC has released a promo for its upcoming sitcom seaon, celebrating 60 Years of UK comedies.
The reel includes footage from Are You Being Served? and Porridge plus the Keeping Up Appeances prequel in Young Hyacinth.
Nostalgia aside, some of the new comedies actually look more interesting.
Shane Allen, Controller, Comedy Commissioning, said, “This Landmark Sitcom Season is a celebration of the craft of comedy writing. We’ve chosen pieces across all four channels that recognise and extol the original minds that come up with these funny settings, characters and lines that make such an impression upon us.”

Well. Okay. I guess.
I didn’t laugh much at those clips, though.
While I’m always a fan of sitcoms, but I just don’t understand the point of these “remakes” of classics like Are You Being Served, Porridge etc – why not just show the originals rather than remakes using different actors? As for “Young Hyacinth” it’s almost unrecognisable from Keeping Up Appearances. I’m not sure it needed a prequel, but we’ll see how it goes. While I’m certain virtually none of this will get an Aussie broadcast, it would be interesting to see some of the new sitcoms.
