US vampire thriller drama The Strain has been renewed for a fourth and final season, to screen in 2017.
Season three of the drama from producers Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan begins tonight in Australia on FOX8.
“We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and their creative team as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of The Strain,” said FX Networks president of original programming Nick Grad. “Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion.”
“Our original plan was for the series to last three years,” Cuse said today. “Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on Season 3, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climatic Season 4. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

There’s a fair bit of repetition in The Strain’s thin plot as there is in ‘The Walking Dead’ so the 3 seasons originally envisaged was likely the sensible time to finish the show. Having a 4th and final season will give the regular actors a chance to give their characters an appropriate ending and I suspect that the traditional temptation of US producers to leave a story twist for a possible future revival will be included.
Vampires?! I don’t think so mister! Great series, as silly as it is it’s gotten me hooked.
That’s essentially what it is. Not the exact sense, but there are a lot of similarities (burned by sunlight etc)
