Axed: Marco Polo

Sweeping period drama Marco Polo is ending at 2 seasons.

Netflix period drama Marco Polo is ending at 2 seasons.

The saga, featuring Lorenzo Richelmy, Benedict Wong and Aussie Remy Hii, becomes the first Netflix original scripted series to not be renewed for a third season.

Netflix vice president of original content Cindy Holland said, “We want to thank and are grateful to our partners on Marco Polo from the actors, whose performances were enthralling and top-notch; to the committed producers, including John Fusco, Dan Minahan, Patrick Macmanus, and their crew, who poured their hearts into the series; and of course Harvey [Weinstein], David [Glasser] and our friends at TWC, who were great collaborators from start to finish.”

Weinstein Co. co-chairman Harvey Weinstein, added “Netflix has been incredible to give us the room to make a series with a cast true to every principle of diversity. It’s a bold network that allows you to do that and support us in the way that Netflix did. As many people know, Asian history and the world of martial arts have fascinated me for all of my career — I’ve made many movies around these topics and this genre, and now this TV show I’m so proud of. John has been a great partner and we’re both fascinated to continue exploring this exciting period in history on future projects together.”

  1. I’ve only just started watching it and found that the period of time between watching each episode increased without any desire to binge watch at all. This does not mean it was not a quality show, which it is apparently losing Netflix $200 million dollars, but the genre has been well catered for by the Chinese/Hong Kong TV and movie industry, it would need to have something original to give it a spark, which unfortunately it Doesn’t. Tom Wu as one hundred eyes could have a show of his own though, I would vote him the most charismatic character worth preserving, it’s a shame Marvel didn’t create him to add to their Netflix collection.

  2. You can tell they were clutching for ideas in season two. Even calling it Marco Polo and Friends would have been generous. It might have been better titled as The Kahns.
