Cheerful Nate Byrne will join the new weather presenter on ABC News Breakfast, replacing Vanessa O’Hanlon who departed late last year.
Declaring a passion for science, he is a Meteorologist, Oceanographer and currently a Royal Australian Navy Lieutenant.
In addition to a Master of Science Communication Outreach and 12 years experience in the navy, Byrne was a scholar of the Shell Questacon Science Circus and toured the country delivering science shows to outback communities across Australia.
“I’m really looking forward to joining the team at ABC News Breakfast and communicating the science behind climate phenomena to viewers,” said Byrne. “People often tell me that they are interested in the weather, but that they don’t really understand it – just what is a cold front? I’m excited to get the opportunity to explain what is really driving a drought or causing a flood alongside the daily weather outlook.”
He begins on Monday, 13 March after departing his Naval duties.

To boost the weather report, European TV is renowned for using topless female weather presenters and where cold fronts are shown regularly, with nipple like arrows indicating the direction. Not to be out-done, a Finnish radio station, Radiosuomipop, copied the idea but it was a bit pointless. I believe that the video is available on boob-tube.
Good stuff. I only just realised O’hanlon had fully left… that’s how much I pay attention lol. She was good and a pleasant, familiar face. She’s taken a more leading role I hear – she’ll do well. This Byrne has quite the pedigree though and as a very junior pilot I often wish for more depth in weather reporting, not just for me but so everyone builds understanding over time. Up here in Brisbane, Ray Wilkie with his marker pen was my yard stick as a kid. Good luck!
How come it’s taken so long to confirm a permanent replacement to forecast the weather, the ABC 24 News show is not exactly the state of the art for news studio production, in some ways it’s a bit like watching radio with pictures.
Jane Bunn Channel 7 Melbourne is also a trained Meteorologist
Wish him well. Ms O’Hanlon is a hell of a hard act to follow.
“just what is a cold front?” – um…when your fly is undone? Isn’t David Brown the only other Meteorologist weather presenter. As one of the Barbie girls said some time ago “it doesn’t take a meteorologist to read an autocue”, but it does add credibility when the weather person is able to join in a conversation with others to explain why and how.
There’s also a chance that he’ll be able to wing it and at least provide some basic data if his autocue fails.
Lol @ Jason.
There are many presenters who have meteorology background, don’t quote me on the details, but in QLD, Ch10 have Josh Holt who speaks as if we are all learning weather for the first time , every time there is a cyclone he tells us how it forms, then he talks about “spits and spats” as rainfall and “snap crackle and pop” for Thunder storms. Ch7 in QLD also has Tony Auden, who has a meteorology background! I hope Nate goes well and is informative, but treats the viewers as intelligent too.
Tim Baley in Sydney, on TEN, always uses the term, ‘drips and drops across rooftops and crops’. love it.
ex navy? has Sunrise done that? Mr Pell won’t be happy someone doing something before Australia’s number one and most annoying breakfast show
They can’t say breakfast show, so it would be “Australia’s number one and annoying breakfast show” Which is true.
you basically said what I said. lol
