The History Channel will screen a premiere special on a legendary Aussie boxer, Les Darcy: The Maitland Wonder.

Darcy was a middleweight, but held the Australian Heavyweight Championship title at the same time, early last century.

In 2003 he was inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame Old Timers category and was the first to be elevated to Legend status in 2009.

In an era when boxing champions held a celebrity status even greater than that of today, one man’s success made him a legend in his lifetime – Les Darcy, The Maitland Wonder. With extensive archival footage and accounts from people who shared his life and saw him fight we revealing the man behind the legend. This documentary depicts his progress from the blacksmiths workshop in Maitland to the thunderous applause before a full house at Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay Stadium. A hero to some, a coward to others. This is one of the most amazing stories in Australia’s sporting history.

  1. This is an amazing story. Peter Fitzsimons book on Les Darcy is incredible. This is the kind of Australian history that all should know about, especially if you are a sports fan.
