Budget dumps licence fees, introduces gambling ad ban.

Treasurer Scott Morrison's Budget last night delivers on media reform package.

Treasurer Scott Morrison’s Budget last night addressed the licence fees that networks have been seeking to cut, as announced by Communications Minister Mitch Fifield on the weekend.

The govt will abolish licence fees, of about $130m but replace them with the a $40m spectrum fee.

Gambling ads will be banned in Live Sport in family-viewing times, from five minutes before the start of coverage until five minutes after the conclusion of play or 8.30pm, whichever comes sooner.

The government also plans to dump the ‘2 out of 3’ ad, which is the most contentions of the new measures, and the 75% Reach rule.

Pay TV operators will also have a better chance to bid for major sports, and there’ll be additional funding for the screening of women’s sport.

Tomorrow Labor outlines its Budget Right of Reply.

  1. Some people believe that the 2 out of 3 rule is no longer necessary because of the Internet. The Internet Media has no obligation to tell the truth, Facebook, Twitter, “alternative facts”.
What is so magical about 8:30 pm? I believe the ban on gambling ads should be extended to 5 minutes past the end of the broadcast.

    1. Why not extend the gambling ban to include Live Internet streaming services.
Different rules for different services running the same game makes no sense. #unevenplayingfield
