Barbra Streisand and Gwynneth Paltrow are both in discussions to star in The Politician, a new comedy series for Netflix from longtime collaborators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk & Ian Brennan.
The project, starring Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen), which revolves around Platt’s Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbara resident.
Each season will centre on a different political race that the character is involved in. Platt is expected to have musical numbers in the show.
The deal, believed to be the biggest US TV package sale of the year, came after a bidding war from Amazon and Hulu, sources said.
Deadline reports if Streisand and Paltrow’s deals close, Streisand will be part of the production team as well as directing, with Paltrow also expected to produce. It would be the first major TV series role for both feature actresses.
The Politician gives prolific creator-producer Murphy two series on Netflix, along with the upcoming One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest prequel Ratched, starring Sarah Paulson.
Production is expected to start in the late summer.
