Alan Cumming to guest in Doctor Who

Alan Cumming to play Scottish king James I (which was supposed to be a secret).

Alan Cumming (The Good Wife, Instinct) has an upcoming role in Doctor Who as Scottish king James I.

“I’m about to go and do an episode of Doctor Who,” Cumming revealed on a podcast to Will Young and Chris Sweeney.

“I’m so excited! I’ve never been in it.”

Cumming confirmed he was playing a villain but addd that he was “like, a nice baddie.

“I’m James I. So I’m kind of like, you know, a kind of dandy, foppy, coward who kind of comes alright in the end. And they said he might come back.”

But he later took to Twitter to say “Whoops, the cat’s out of the bag!….it was supposed to be a big secret, so… that’s good.”

Meanwhile his new US procedural Instinct airs in mid-March in the US and is coming to TEN.

  1. @Dr_Rudi don’t forget it screens/has screened here on Gem also …. :]

“Doctor Who” may be getting on the tired side, but I’d like to see what Jodie Whitaker brings to the series. I *know* she’s Chris Chibnall’s darling, but even so. I’d like to see what happens to the TARDIS come October [so I hear].

And let’s not forget either, the “Doctor Who” IP is a massive international money-spinner for the Beeb, now second only to BBC Earth in terms of revenue [previously third, back when Clarkson et al. “Top Gear” was top of the tree.] I fear to say it’s now too important to the BBC to drop while it’s arguably worth its weight in gold.

  2. Sorry, do not understand the comment, who is ‘they’, if you mean the BBC, then they have renewed Line of Duty for at least 2 more series and Dr.Who for at least 5 more series(according to BBC Worldwide).

    1. Yes they announced it May last year when they signed deal with SMG Pictures in China and said:
The deal will see the entire catalogue of Doctor Who including spin-offs, Torchwood and Class available on popular TV channels and on-demand platforms all over China. The deal not only covers Showrunners Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat’s Series 1- 10, but also incoming Showrunner Chris Chibnall’s yet-to-film Series 11, as well as a first look for Series 12-15.

Plus there was also a Memorandum of Understanding announced that: BBC Worldwide will be working with SMG Pictures to increase the Doctor Who fan base in China, exploring future opportunities as well as exchanging expertise between the two teams.

So yeah Doctor Who isn’t going anywhere for a while.

Actually surprised the BBC isn’t doing what MGM have done with the Stargate franchise and given it it’s own streaming service…

    1. Well, you’ve rather thrown everything into the pot – and not in a good way.

Dr Who will be on the ABC in due course.
Line of Duty screens on 13th Street (FoxTel), and then the ABC.
      Instinct is coming to TEN.
