Karl takes aim at cover story

How a TV Tonight interview became a tabloid magazine cover story.

Across the Logies weekend, quite a few journos commended me on my recent interview with Karl Stefanovic, asking how I got him to open up.

Perhaps he appreciated that I hadn’t filed on his marriage break-up over the two years everybody else did. Or maybe I asked career questions instead of those surrounding impending nuptials.

Either way, a number of other media aggregated the story acknowledging the source.

New Idea magazine originally attributed it to TV Week before their error was pointed out and fixed.

But I didn’t expect it would become their cover story this week with the headline “Karl At Breaking Point: The Moment That Ended it All.” Sheesh.

The story goes on to say that in a “heated moment” he spoke about being broken. Sorry guys. Only me, Karl and a Nine publicist were there for the interview. There was no heated moment.

It’s no surprise he has taken to social media to bag the cover.

“Another day another cover from No idea. Just for the record the only thing broken in this photo was my serve. And I have years left on my contract. Ha. You guys rock!! X” he wrote.

Ironically the original interview also delved into his views on clickbait, magazine covers and misleading headlines.

  1. I cant believe people, well…….women, still buy this rubbish. Is it their insatiable thirst for gossip ??? Because the magazine is nothing but trash .

    1. I’ve questioned this myself but if readers continue to purchase this garbage there will be a market for magazines like No Idea. If we took No Idea as factual poor Jennifer Aniston has had the longest pregnancy in human history.

    2. I’ve had the misfortune to be stuck reading these mags a few times recently. It’s scary how much content is basically ‘performative outrage’ given a tissue-thin veneer of newsworthyness simply by being printed. If not straight-out BS…

Much of it boils down to “[X] said [something which, out of context & in the worst possible light, might be slightly offensive], & people [like you, reader] are outraged – is it ‘PC gone mad’ or are they just a horrible person?”.

Or “[insert star here] is doing [innocuous thing] with [Z] – is it a new trend [so slightly controversial to our older/more conservative readers] or are they harming [Z]?”

They really are nothing more than Jones/Hadley/Bolt/etc stand-ins for a slightly different audience.

(p.s. nice work, David! You know you’ve made it when they start twisting your words…)

    3. Oh, and there’s plenty of male-targeted magazines which are just as bad (or, since they usually come with an added splash of anger, worse). It’s just that those examples are rarely viewed with the same critical eye as women’s magazines, for some strange reason that I can’t quite put my finger on right now… 😉

  2. You rock David Knox…you are respectful and conduct sensible interviews….not money grubbing sensationalism….. The pieces you write are articulate, interesting and a pleasure to read….As an avid reader, your writing is more what I enjoy, even above the content….Thank you.

  3. Maybe Karl has seen your previous interesting and excellent interviews with other personalities David and knew he could trust you. I will never understand why people buy those rubbish magazines and worse still actually believe the rubbish they print.
