Survey finds 1 in 4 female comedians has been molested

International survey triggered by the death of Eurydice Dixon reveals alarming statistics in the world of comedy.

An international survey of working comedians claims one in 4 female performers has been molested by a colleague and around one in 13 has been raped by a fellow comic.

UK based Chortle website conducted the survey following the death of Melbourne comedian Eurydice Dixon, killed on her way home from a gig in June.

The survey found travelling home late at night poses a big risk to safety. A quarter of women have been molested, 29 per cent faced physical violence, and 75 per cent had been subjected to verbal sexual harassment.

Men also face dangers, with one in five facing violence on the way home from a gig, and a slightly higher proportion report being molested by punters after a gig.

More than 300 stand-ups took part: 145 women, 170 men, eight non-binary performers and five that chose not to state their gender.

Chortle’s study also found that most incidents go unreported – with more than two-thirds of those who were assaulted remaining silent.

Concerningly, the site also published anonymous abuse examples including an incident alleged to have taken place in Melbourne in 2016 involving a male comedian, reported to police.

Comedian Hannah Gadsby revealed in Nanette she was also a victim of abuse and rape.
