Airdate: The Day

SBS premieres a 2018 drama set around a hostage situation in a bank.

SBS tonight premieres 2018 drama The Day, set around a hostage situation in a bank.

Beginning with a double episode this 12 part series in Dutch with English subtitles, also available at SBS On Demand.

A bank robbery in a small town gets out of hand. Police and hostage takers start a nail-biting cat-and-mouse game that holds the town in its grip for an entire day. The series alternately looks at events from the perspective of the police, the press, as well as that of the bank robbers, the victims, and their families.

The odd episodes tell the story of a team of police negotiators and Special Forces who respond to a hostage crisis in a small bank branch. The even episodes tell exactly the same events, only through the eyes of the criminals inside and their victims. Each new instalment lifts a tiny piece of the veil, and the viewers gradually realise there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Series One, Episode One:
A bank robbery shocks a small Flemish town. The hostage takers barricade themselves inside a bank, where they keep a number of people hostage. The police arrive on the premises and try to contain the situation.

Episode Two:
It’s dawn in the small Flemish town. Two robbers make their way to a bank branch, where they take staff members, one customer, and two children hostage. The police arrive and nerve-racking negotiations start.

Monday, 8 October at 11.30pm on SBS.

Corrected.

  1. I was literally thinking today that I had run out of English speaking dramas and might have to try subtitled. I should probably start with something more acclaimed though.

    1. Flemish rather than Walloon-regional dialects of Dutch and French used in Belgium.-SBS aren’t pushing this one with an 11.30 start and no promotion-this series reminds me of ‘JCVD’ with Van Damme doing an unusual spin on his film persona.

  2. The references to a ‘Flemish town’ in the episode synopsis makes me think this may be a Belgian drama, rather than Dutch as you stated in your opener?
