Seven scrubs in for Operation Live

A real time birth & open heart surgery will beam into Australian living rooms in 2019.

A  real time birth and open heart surgery will feature on Operation: Live, a 2 part event to screen on Seven in 2019.

Based on a UK format, they will be beamed into living rooms in real time with a multi-camera set up …from the first incision to the very last stitch.

Alongside medical procedures, cameras will capture family members while their loved one undergoes surgery.

Seven’s Director of Programming, Angus Ross, said Operation: Live would demystify exactly what unfolds during surgery and underline the brilliant work that takes place in our hospitals.

“This event will give audiences a front row seat to a fascinating world that’s normally off limits,” he said. “When the format aired in the UK, social media was flooded with questions and overwhelming praise for the medical teams involved with people completely in awe of what they had seen.

“Working with ITV Studios Australia and some of Australia’s top-tier hospitals and their elite surgeons, we’re privileged to present this innovative experience for Australian audiences.”

Operation: Live will feature expert commentary from Australian trained cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Nikki Stamp FRACS (pictured). Dr Stamp will explain the stages of the operation as they happen, working with the surgeon performing the operation.

One of only 11 female cardiothoracic surgeons in Australia and a leading advocate for heart health, Dr Stamp’s research has been published in numerous leading medical journals including the ANZ Journal of Surgery and the British Medical Journal. She also teaches medical students and surgical trainees.

Operation: Live is an ITV Studios Australia production for Channel Seven.Operation: Live was created by The Garden Productions, part of ITV Studios.

  1. I personally, am really looking forward to seeing this when it airs to channel 7. i have just recently entered my new medical career, and am very keen to see more if operating procedures……. to learn more .. as I did when I was a medical student….. Thank you to all responsible for bringing this to live tv…… am eagerly awaiting..!!?

  2. What happens if something goes horribly wrong with the birth or operation? would be my first question
Secondly recently a Brisbane hospital was concerned professional photographers would be distracting in a birthing suite. How would a TV crew and expert commentator (making it sound like a sports broadcast not a medical procedure) not be more so?
Aside from that I think it’s quite a creative and innovative idea something TV needs at the moment. Not sure id watch it though.

    1. The birth of Little Ricky on I Love Lucy was a huge US ratings drawcard. The episode was the culmination of an unprecedented pairing of the fictional pregnancy of Lucy with the real-life pregnancy of Lucille Ball.

  3. I’m sorry but this sounds absolutely disgusting. Why on earth would you want this aired on television, let alone live streamed. The birth of a child is a sacred moment, don’t ruin your child’s life before it even begins. They will be forever known as the kid who was born on TV. Madness…
