Oscars backflip over controversial awards move

Four categories ditched from the Live broadcast are now back where they should be.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has backflipped on a controversial decision to award four Academy Awards during commercial breaks.

Open letters from A-list talent and criticism from craft unions prompted the move.

Cinematography, film editing, live action shorts and hair and makeup categories are back in the ceremony which will now run over three hours.

“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24,” a statement said.

Nine will screen the awards Live at 12pm Monday February 25 and repeated primetime on 9GEM.

  1. I heard a great comment in the media today (attribution unknown but it sounds like it came from the film industry itself) something along the lines of, “There have been films without color, films without sound, films without music, films without actors (etc); but all films have photography and editing”.

  2. Film editing and cinematography are really important awards and should be televised. But I could do without hairstyling and make up and live action shorts. That’s just my opinion anyway, others may disagree. But I feel that the Oscars will have to start trimming the number of awards during the show to make the telecast more manageable in the future. It is way too long at the moment.
