Sisters adaptation proceeding to pilot in USA

Good news for local drama, becoming a rare title going forward in the US after a short run in Australia.

Short-lived Australian drama Sisters is proceeding with its US adaptation on FOX.

The series was created by Jonathan Gavin and Imogen Banks and has had one season on 10 in 2017, produced by Endemol Shine Australia.

In October it was give a ‘put pilot’ commitment from FOX (meaning there would be big costs if it did not proceed), with Annie Weisman (Desperate Housewives, The Path, I Feel Bad) and Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Rise), joining Imogen Banks (Offspring) as executive producers. Weisman has also written the pilot with Leslye Headland (Russian Doll) to direct.

Deadline reports the untitled project was one of the hottest drama scripts at FOX, but the last to get a pilot order as it took some time to hammer out a co-production deal.

In the US, a retired Indiana fertility doctor made headlines in 2016 when he was sued for using his own sperm around 50 times on unwitting female patients he was treating. He avoided jail time but later surrendered his medical license.

There are few Australia shows that proceed in the US after short runs in Australia but Secrets & Lies and Sit Down Shut Up are amongst them.

  1. There are a fair few. Wilfred, The Slap, Secrets & Lies, Kath & Kim, Rake, No Activity, Riot (Slide show), Thank God You’re Here and MKR have all had US versions.

  2. I really liked Sisters & Secrets & Lies too. Was disappointed they were not renewed for a second season. Would have liked to watch the American Secrets & Lies but it wasn’t on here. They’ve also done a TV series of our movie Animal Kingdom.
