Renewed: Last Tango in Halifax

UK drama everybody thought was over will return in 2020.

Hold the phone…..UK drama Last Tango in Halifax has had a surprise renewal by the BBC.

‘Surprise’ because star Derek Jacobi told Radio Times writer Sally Wainwright was too busy with other projects.

“She’s a wonderful writer, but she’s got so much work that Tango is finished,” he said in 2017.

“It’s very sad, we all loved it.”

Wainwright is indeed in demand with successes such as Gentleman Jack, Happy Valley (can I have some more please?) and previously Scott & Bailey.

The BBC has now confirmed the series is set to return with a 4-part series beginning in 2020.

Last Tango in Halifax tells the story of former childhood sweethearts Celia and Alan (Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi) who have reunited later in life, as well as their respective grown-up daughters – played by Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire. The story is based on her mother, Dorothy, who was widowed in 2001, moved to Oxfordshire to live with her daughter and rediscovered a lost love.

It has aired in Australia on ABC.

  1. I think it was in the same RT interview, Derek Jacobi ‘let slip’ that the 2-part Christmas special was indeed written as part of a 6-part series.

Pleased to see its return. Love a good gentle series like this every once in a while.

Speaking of Sally Wainwright, David, I’ve heard a rumour Happy Valley has been pushed out to next year by the Beeb. Any confirmation?

    1. Its a great show and pleased to read it is returning. Been enjoying Nicola Walker in a few other shows of late via Netflix or ABC, but pleased to read we will see the cast reunited. And ditto David – love Happy Valley (if love is the right word?)
