Airdate: Pilgrimage: Road to Rome

8 UK celebrities travel to Rome to meet the Pope.

In August the LifeStyle channel screens a curious three part UK series, Pilgrimage: Road to Rome.

This features a range of celebrities, including Stephen K. Amos and Eurovision‘s 1970 winner Dana (not to be confused with Israel’s Dana International) travelling to meet the Pope.

Eight celebrities of differing faiths and beliefs strap on backpacks and have 15 days to tackle 1,000km of the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage, from the Italian Alps to Rome, where a private audience with the Pope awaits. They start their pilgrimage in the Alps, just before the Swiss-Italian border. Will this journey of a lifetime change the way they think about themselves and their beliefs? Actors Les Dennis and Lesley Joseph, professional dancer Brendan Cole, comedians Stephen K Amos and Katy Brand, Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford, Irish Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana and television presenter Mehreen Baig live as modern-day pilgrims.

Tuesdays from August 6 at 9.30pm on LifeStyle.

Sight-unseen, for me, I think the *curious* thing is having atheists, agnostics, a Muslim, a non-practising Jew and various lapsed Christians complete a Christian pilgrimage. The road to Rome isn’t the road to Damascus; and I suspect there are no burning bushes (great TV if there is). Still, you get to meet the Bishop of Rome at the end.

That aside, I hope ABC or SBS pick this up for FTA.
