Returning: This Time Next Year

Karl Stefanovic returns to Nine in two weeks time.

Karl Stefanovic returns to Nine in two weeks time with the second season of This Time Next Year.

Filmed in early 2018 and 2019, it again sees ordinary Aussies hoping to change their lives.

“I’m really proud and excited to be hosting series two of This Time Next Year,” he said. “I’ve met some truly inspiring Australians who will warm the hearts of viewers by pledging to reach huge personal goals in just one year.

“We have a whole new group of contributors as diverse as a 101-year-old woman who wants to learn to fly, a wheelchair-bound mum who dreams of running in the backyard with her five-year-old son, and a woman who wants to medically transition to being a man.

This Time Next Year is an absolute joy to work on, and I’m not going to lie, I shed a tear or two.”

Stefanovic has no hosted on Nine since he was dumped by Today in December.

The inspirational and feelgood series This Time Next Year, which celebrates everyday Aussies tackling monumental personal goals during the most challenging year of their lives, is returning for a second series on Monday, August 12 at 9.15pm to Nine.

In every heart-warming episode, people from across the country will pledge to change their lives by “this time next year” – whether it is to overcome a setback, find love, reunite with a relative or even achieve a world record. Then the result of each year-long story will be revealed in an instant.

Hosted by Karl Stefanovic, many of the stories take unexpected turns over the course of the year, and some of the physical transformations are truly incredible. Even Karl is unaware of the result until the contributors walk back in.

Episode one of the eight-part series features a range of diverse stories, including brave teenager Eden who has been plagued by a rare form of Tourette Syndrome and pledges to overcome it to go back to school; a mother-daughter duo who plan to lose 100kg of weight between them; and a couple who want to put years of heartache behind them to have a baby.

This Time Next Year is a format developed by Twofour in the UK and produced in Australia by Nine.

Monday, August 12 at 9.15pm on Nine.

  1. So if this rates well again will that put Karl back in the good books & maybe lead to him returning to The Today Show? Since it’s obvious that he wasn’t the cause of the low ratings after all. It hasn’t rated better since he left.

  2. It is a fantastic format – though agree the mid-evening format perhaps shows a little lack of faith from programmers… however, if it builds and does a decent job there I think it could well get a more prominent slot next season. Besides, on the FTA channels there is too often little of note to watch post-9pm some nights after the big stripped reality-type formats have finish at around 9pm (and that’s assuming you’ve chosen to commit to one or more of them).

    1. But it also gets the network’s biggest lead-in, so not a complete lack of faith. I expect there will be weeks it is a bit earlier. Many people seem to have forgotten TTNY actually rated very well for Nine.
