10 to close 10 Daily, Sales team redundancies.

News & Entertainment site to close at 10; further redundancies in Sales team.

News out of 10 today confirms the closure of online news platform 10 Daily from Friday, impacting journalists, editors, video editors and social media staff.

Separately, 10 has also advised of a small number of redundancies in its Sales Team following the merger of Network 10 and ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand.

10 Daily launched in May 2018 with a mix of entertainment, lifestyle and short-form video, with Mel Cornford as Managing Editor. Lisa Wilkinson as Executive Editor and Sandra Sully as Managing News Editor. Chris Harrison was later promoted to Editor and Mat Whitehead as Entertainment Editor.

A Network 10 spokesperson said, “Network 10’s digital media strategy is evolving to capitalise on our momentum and match the new ViacomCBS global operating model. That means an increased emphasis on streaming services and social media.

“Over the past two years, 10 Daily has established a strong presence and a loyal following, thanks to a passionate and hardworking team producing great content. We are grateful for their efforts to drive that success. As a result of the strategic change, however, 10 Daily will cease to exist as a standalone website.”

“Some of the 10 Daily roles will remain. Some of the 10 Daily content will also transfer to 10 Play and our social media brands.”

10 declined to comment on how many roles are directly impacted.

Separately 10 has also advised staff of redundancies in its Sales team following the merger of Network 10 and ViacomCBS.

“The changes announced today will have a minimal impact on the 10 ViacomCBS sales team. Less than 10 employees have been affected, or less than 5% of the total team. Separate to these changes, we are currently looking to expand the team’s capabilities,” the spokesperson said.

In a note to staff, Beverley McGarvey, ViacomCBS Australia & New Zealand Chief Content Officer and EVP, said, “The recent impact of COVID-19 on the media industry has reinforced that need to continue to align our business with our evolving customer needs and global business model. But I want to stress that the changes are part of our broader strategy, not a reaction to recent events.”

She added, “To those staff let me express my sincere thanks for all your hard work, dedication and professionalism during your time here. We will fully support you during this period and I wish you all the very best for the future.”

The news follows Seven West Media also announcing redundancies in its Sales team.

  1. Just came up on my Facebook Memories….I live streamed the Sussex’s wedding on 10Play….
How sad…many tweets and little videos ..gone…but still lovely to go back over guests and fashion etc…..I wonder if it will still be there or disappear completely?

  2. This seems awfully premature.

As brutal as might seem, they could have cut back on say video roles or even half their writing staff for the site, then work on ways to make the actual hosting of the site cheaper.

I mean they’re meant to be launching a new channel right? It would make a lot more sense to cross-promote the heck out of the new channel and later once this thing is over make a choice about what to do with the site then.
To knee-jerk kill the entire thing down is just really short-sighted, also a shame for archiving if they don’t place the content elsewhere.

  3. 10 Daily probably shouldn’t have ever happened as entertainment articles have always been published on 10 Play (in the relevant show section) and news should always have been posted in the articles section on 10 News First. Anyways, it’s a blow to all the journalists and video producers there.
