The Crimson Petal and the White

Chris O’Dowd, Romola Garai and Gillian Anderson star in this 4-part adaptation of Michel Faber’s international bestselling novel. The streets of 1870s London are anything but safe in the story of an unconventional and strong-willed young prostitute and the reluctant heir to a perfume business.

William Rackham is at the end of his tether. Failing as a writer, deeply in debt and loath to join his father’s soap business, he is further plagued by his unstable wife, Agnes, who draws disrepute on the family either by her reclusive behaviour or dramatic public outbursts. He finds solace when he seeks out the renowned prostitute Sugar, and is deeply impressed by her literary and sexual prowess. Sugar in turn is mourning the recent death of her friend Elizabeth, and enacts fantasies of revenge on all those who have wronged her in a novel she writes about a murderous whore. William is transformed by Sugar’s magic touch and embarks on a newly successful life in the cosmetics industry, taking on Sugar to be exclusively his. Meanwhile his brother, Henry, is encouraged to begin charitable works in the brothels of London by the dedicated widow, Mrs Fox, between whom there is a palpable but repressed sexual tension.
