Overnight ratings moving to 10am

A big change is coming to daily ratings.

As previously flagged, a major shake-up is coming in television ratings with OzTAM to place a 10am embargo on Overnight ratings.

It follows a push by networks to seek to better reflect a Total TV picture of how audiences are viewing.

From Monday September 13, Daily Overnight Linear TV Program Ranking will be under a 10am embargo.

Around 9:15am it will first release Daily Consolidated 7 Total TV Program Ranking. This will rank shows from a week earlier, with metro and regional linear TV figures and the national BVOD figures. It demonstrates how much a show from a week earlier has lifted across the 7 days.

A third report, a Weekly VOZ National Consolidated 7 Total TV Program Ranking, will also be issued weekly.

TV Tonight understands there was some discussion between networks around withholding Overnight figures altogether, but a compromise was reached to release Consolidated figures first in the hope of more reportage around Total TV viewing.

Meanwhile in recent months OzTAM has also requested websites to delete archival ratings data of more than 2 years old (lists, tables or charts) which it is now enforcing.

This will mean archival ratings data is no longer publicly available to industry, viewers, students or journalists.

Prior to 2014 Overnight ratings were issued at 8:30am weekdays.

  1. It will certainly be interesting to see which of the new figures the networks will be selling every morning. It’s already tricky comparing mostly apples to apples, but with new figures coming out daily, it’s almost guaranteed each network will win a prize everyday!

But ordering the deletion of old ratings data is pretty much a dog act. You can’t erase public knowledge like that, it’s not how it works. Revisionist garbage.

  2. I know rimes are changing with tbe way we watch tv. But i, among many others, enjoy the overnight ratings. It’s a habit to come at 9.30.and look at them. 10.00 is okay too. We’ll get used to that.

However, its a shame that ratings from 2 years ago onward wont be seen. It will make certain things hard to compare (Olympics, Sports Grand finals, reslity finals etc).
