Carols returning to the Domain

"There's just been such a fantastic response to getting back to the Domain," says producer Michael McKay.

A favourite Sydney event is returning to its natural home.

After disrupted plans in 2020, Carols in the Domain is back in Sydney’s iconic Domain in December.

Natalie Barr and David Koch will host the 39th event to be held on Saturday December 18.

Michael McKay from activeTV told TV Tonight, “We’re heading back into what is really the traditional home for the event, and has been since 1981, in the Domain right in the heart of the city.

“It was interesting last year at the ICC in Sydney. It was air conditioned, there was no wind, no rain to worry about -a very controlled environment. The show itself was great and it rated really well on Seven.

“It was meant to have an audience. Everything was going along well in Sydney and then the day before, there was the North Shore outbreak.”

“So we ended up doing it without an audience.”

First performers announced include Samantha Jade, Penny McNamee, Mark Vincent, and Paulini, and of course Santa Claus.

“There’s just been such a fantastic response to getting back to the Domain. I think people love getting together as a community, with all the candles. I think it makes a big difference to people.

“A lot of times the artists tell us they don’t feel like it’s Christmas until they are there. They love doing it and we love having them back.”

Families need to register their interest in attending this year, while organisers are liaising with NSW Health over COVID-safe precautions.

“We’re waiting on a little further advice because it’s changing all the time, but we’ve got a few COVID plans.

“There’s a few adjustments that you need to make with the size of choirs, the size of orchestras, backstage dressing rooms. Obviously you’ve got COVID marshals, and we expect it to be fully ticketed event this year, but we’re awaiting further advice.”

More performers will be announced in coming weeks. The event will screen on Seven several days after it is held, at 7:30pm Thursday December 23rd.

  1. Why isn’t this being broadcast live on December 18? Why does it need to wait until December 23 to be aired? I think this is a very stupid decision by Channel Seven, but I do like it being broadcast on December 23! It should just be aired live on December 23 though!

Is this the first time it hasn’t been broadcast live? Why not broadcast it live? Melbourne’s Carols by Candlelight is always live to air.

    1. I’m wondering if the delay is incase there are issues relating to covid and it allows for more time up their sleeves to deal with the issues that may arise?
