Returning: The Sound

One of 2020's undiscovered gems is back for a third season on ABC.

Great to hear The Sound will return to the ABC in November.

This was one of 2020’s undiscovered gems, 165 artists filmed with world-class production values, performances captured in 149 unique and spectacular locations and venues across the country.

Produced by Mushroom Studios and with artist line-up and episode details to be revealed soon. This season sees a new Producer with Tom Macdonald succeeding Saul Shtein, and Matt Gudinski now as Executive Producer.

Matt Gudinski, Chief Executive of Mushroom Group: ‘Giving artists a platform to perform on a national stage in the comfort of viewers homes has been a remarkable feat for The Sound. The third season promises amazing up-and-coming local talent as well as some big household names. As with the previous seasons, it’ll all be showcased via world class production.’

Meagan Loader, ABC Head of Music & Creative Development, ‘We can’t wait to share another season of The Sound with the ABC’s Australian music loving audience this November, as part of Ausmusic Month. In 2021, the ABC’s national radio and TV networks are bringing more local music to more fans around the country than any other broadcaster. We’re fired up to continue supporting the industry in 2022 and to reconnect our audience to live music performance – there’s nothing like it.’

It’s been 19 months since COVID-19 decimated Australia’s $36.4 billion Live Entertainment Industry. Launched in July 2020 and created by the late, legendary Michael Gudinski, The Sound’s purpose is clear: to showcase Australian artists on a national audience and help create a much-needed sense of community. ‘This is about Australian music,” Gudinski told Billboard back in September 2020. “I’ve learned you’ve got to turn something negative into something positive.’

  1. Good to hear this is coming back. Having recently watched some of the highlights on the Recovery DVD, if it’s not possible to bring back that kind of approach (either now or in the future), well I’ll take what I can get.

  2. Great to hear, I wasn’t a fan of all the music acts presented but liked the concept of ways of getting music out, interviews and music news

Was well produced especially with novel ways of broadcasting musical performances in a Covid safe way and unique venues
