Balmoral, a secluded Royal retreat that has been embraced by Kings and Queens since its very first Royal owner Queen Victoria in 1852. This vast 50,000-acre estate is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the British Isles, the Scottish Highlands. It is Queen Elizabeth’s favourite home, but what is really known about this estate and what really goes on behind the castle walls?

This series explores the dramatic history of Balmoral and the impact these events have had on its current owner, Queen Elizabeth II. During her 65 year long reign this Royal home has been the ideal place for the Queen to recharge her batteries every Summer. But as well as offering a relaxing respite from the relentless Royal engagements, Balmoral has witnessed key events that have shaped the lives of Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal Family.

Episode One:
Balmoral has been the ideal retreat for Queen Elizabeth throughout her life. She loves the outdoor life and embraces many of the traditions that have survived since Queen Victoria’s time. One of these longstanding events is the annual ‘Ghilie Ball’ where staff and Royals dance together in the grand Ballroom at Balmoral Castle.
