Upcoming US series Shantaram recently resumed filming in Melbourne, after a string of setbacks.

Based on Gregory David Robert’s (pictured) best-selling novel and starring Charlie Hunnam, the 10-part series centres around a man on the run from Pentridge prison looking to get lost in the teeming city of Bombay. Cut off from family and friends by distance and fate, he finds a new life in the slums, bars and underworld of India. The novel is described as a thrilling and profound exploration of love, forgiveness, and courage on the long road to redemption.

Directed by Justin Kurzel and Bharat Nalluri, filming has taken place in Victoria, India and Thailand with a number of setbacks due to the pandemic and weather. It was originally optioned for Johnny Depp in 2003 who later discusses Joel Edgerton taking the role.

Filming was halted in May 2020 due to COVID-19 but recently resumed at Docklands, and locations in North Melbourne and Caulfield.

It is set to screen on Apple TV+.
