‘Raaby’ celebrates 50 years at Seven

Veteran news cameraman chalks up half a century of service at Seven.

Veteran Seven News Perth cameraman, Ray Raab this week has marked an incredible 50 years of service with the network.

He first joined Seven Epping on February 14th 1972, starting at just $29.50 a week with a contract that even included shift work.

He now calls Perth home.

Ray Kuka, Seven News Director, Perth said in a note to staff, “Back then, the studios in Epping were buzzing. TV dramas were shot in studios next to game shows next to the news service.

“Audiences were large, the budgets were big and the cafeteria was THE place in Sydney to get a coffee for your chance to mingle with Aussie and international celebrities.

“So the tall and confident Austrian with a thick head of hair settled in well in that crowd and the buzz of the place saw Ray Raab fall in love with TV.

“I mean, there may have been one or two potential tense moments on the road since then, but Raaby’s relentlessness to get the shot, to find the narrative, to get people talking has not wavered.”

Kuka said his years of service was an astounding achievement.

“He shows up like it’s his first day every day. His passion has not wavered. We’re lucky to share his knowledge, from cameramen – reporters and just makers of TV,” he added.

“Thank you Raaby for the incredible service from everyone at Seven.”

  1. Congratulations, and you must be one of a few who grew up with 16mm film when you started and now using the latest digital cameras. I preferred film myself as a I found the early BVU were very heavy. And film you picked your shot as you only had a limited of time, vastly different these days with cards etc
    Well Done !
