Seven moves Wayne Carey from Friday AFL

Daisy Pearce part of a new broom in Seven commentary.

Seven is shaking up its AFL commentary on Friday nights, with Wayne Carey to be replaced by AFLW ‘s Daisy Pearce.

Carey has been commentating for Seven since 2014 and debuts in SAS: Australia next week. In the reality series he addresses an affair with former teammate Anthony Stevens’ wife Kelli.

“My integrity will always be questioned. I’m not trying to prove anything to the public — it’s to myself,” he says.

“People can change. They evolve. Hopefully this can help me.”

The former North Melbourne great has been a fixture of the channel’s flagship team since 2014 but he is set to be shuffled to Saturday nights this season.

Seven Melbourne managing director Lewis Martin told the Herald Sun, “There are a number of changes that are going to happen and it’s just to freshen up the roster.

“He’s coming off SAS, so there’s going to be a number of rotations.”

Daisy Pearce became the first woman to provide special comments for Seven’s coverage of the grand final in 2021, and was widely praised by fans and media for her commentary. She also won the award for Best Opinion / Analysis – TV / Radio at the 2021 Australian Football Media Association Awards.

  1. I think 7 should try having Alister Nicholas in their AFL commentary. He has done many sports for 7 in 2021 & 2022. Doing Olympics, Winter Olympics, WBBL, BBL & even Test Cricket.

Maybe they can have him start with the Sunday afternoon slot and build from there

  2. Alister Nicholson, Tim Lane, Gerard Whateley and of course Bruce McAvaney would all be miles ahead of those two so called commentators, BT (and he does have a real name apparently!!) and James Brayshaw.
I would just like commentators to describe whats happening on the field of play (not in someones personal life), and why its happening that way to the advantage or disadvantage of each team.
A simple idea that great commentators adhere to.

  3. Gotta love it how the media are reporting Daisy Pearce is replacing Wayne Carey… Well no, Daisy did Friday nights basically all last year & some of 2020 “along side” Carey. Carey’s simply just being moved aside/shafted or whatever you want to call it to a different role. Much the same to what they did with Leigh Matthews. Quiet happy with the move in this case TBH. Do wish they would include moving James Brayshaw back to Saturday Nights as part of the “refresh”. He is just not suited to Friday Nights! They need a quality caller back alongside BT to balance the “blokey-humour” with a bit of class.

  4. Dito troy_story agree 100%. arguably the greatest player ever replaced by some who plays AFL at standard level equal to boys under 12 game . What with the mug shot photo David ?

  5. Think it’s a great move honestly. Daisy is the best they have. She’s so informative about the game and knows her stuff….too bad it wasn’t BT they dropped though. He is the worst commentator around and why Seven continue to hire him is beyond me but ok.

  6. Bad move replacing an AFL legend with someone who has played 30 games of AFLW. Though the mention of rotations makes me hope Alister Nicholson is added to the call team.

  7. This is such a non story. To be dropped means that you have no further role to play. He hasn’t been dropped, simply moved to another night. he still has a job…

  8. Oh excellent… replace perhaps the greatest player in AFL history who has experience in practically every situation a match has to offer with a shouty, nonsense filled AFLW player who hasn’t played in front of more than 10,000 ppl give or take. This isn’t a gender thing, or perhaps to a certain extent it is. But not in a malicious way… it’s just that you can’t replace a former player like the King on blockbuster friday night games with someone who has as much experience with it as I do. You want insight, and in-depth analysis from people who have been in those situations…
    Baffling decision.

    1. If you’re want to her insight and in-depth analysis, then Daisy Pearce is miles ahead of Carey. Carey’s understanding of the game has barely evolved since the style of play from the late 90’s. He doesn’t understand the current culture at AFL clubs, doesn’t understand the game play and spends half his time talking like my Uncle when he goes to the footy. No one wants to hear a 10 minute discussion about pickle juice during the third quarter of a game.

Where as Daisy is a modern player, actually watches games that she doesn’t commentate on and has friendships with current AFL mens players that provide her with insight that informs viewers about what’s happening, rather than treating everyone like we’re the drunk slob down at the local pub.

      1. Agree, Daisy Pearce is well-informed and well connected – as being a current-gen player brings some different perspectives etc. from that alone. The fact she is female (obviously) really shouldn’t matter in 2022 – but given she is by definition the first regular prime-time woman to call big games on network TV (I think) then I can see why this change is being highlighted for that reason too. It’s long overdue, but most would feel she’s done this purely on merit and not as part of gender quotas (or whatever it could probably very unfairly be perceived as being part of). Bottom line, she knows her stuff – also evidenced by Geelong Cats AFL main team looking to bring her into its coaching ranks.
