Moomba Monarch Peter Hitchener and Livinia Nixon will present a Moomba special for Melbourne viewers.

Nine Melbourne will screen a Marvellous Moomba special tomorrow night presented by this year’s Moomba Monarch, Peter Hitchener OAM, and Livinia Nixon.

The special traces the history of the festival, previews key performances, and looks at how Moomba floats are made. Lord Mayor Sally Capp and Nine’s Alicia Loxley, Tony Jones, Clint Stanaway and Madeline Slattery will also feature with special guests.

After two years of COVID restrictions, the event takes place from Friday 11 to 14 March, including the Birdman Rally, Moomba Parade (Nine screens this on its Facebook page) and the Moomba Masters water sports competition.

Peter Hitchener said: “Moomba is a Melbourne institution, so it’s such a great honour to represent our city as a Moomba Monarch this year.

“I look forward to using this position to showcase the very best of Melbourne and our community.”

Lord Mayor Capp said: “We are delighted to be bringing back the Moomba Parade, Birdman Rally and Moomba Masters after a hiatus in 2021. These vibrant festival favourites are always huge crowd pleasers, and, along with all the free, family-friendly entertainment, we expect they’ll attract many back to the city.

“Moomba is one of the biggest events on our city’s calendar and we’re expecting almost a million people to revel in the festivities this year, providing a significant boost to our city business owners.”

7.30pm Thursday March 10 on Nine (Melbourne).

  2. I used to love watching the parade of a Moomba Monday morning. I’d look out for floats with Disney Characters or the casts of my favorite tv shows. To think it used to show on all channels too. How times have changed.

  3. So Nine isn’t showing the Parade on TV, people have to go to Facebook? Strange outcome of Nine’s status as official media partner, especially with Peter Hitchener as a Moomba monarch

    1. I remember when they used to show the parade, Birdman Rally and Moomba Masters all on free to air. Was fantastic event viewing for anyone who couldn’t make it into the city. I really miss it.
