Boycott on Russia expands across entertainment industry

Updated: More moves against Russia as entertainment industry increasingly stands with Ukraine.

The global entertainment industry continues to block Russia, following its invasion on Ukraine.

  • Disney, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures Entertainment will pause theatrical releases of upcoming films in Russia. “We will make future business decisions based on the evolving situation,” Disney said in a statement. “In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance.”
  • U.K. screen trade body Pact has called on its members to suspend all co-operation and trade with Russia. In a statement Pact said: “Pact expresses our deepest sympathy for the people of Ukraine, and in particular our colleagues working in Ukraine’s film and television sector. Along with other industry organisations, Pact calls for a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine and for a resolution of conflict by diplomatic means respecting the rule of law and the rights of the Ukrainian people.”
  • Series Mania festival in France said it had disinvited Roskino, the Russian government-backed advocacy organisation for the nation’s film and TV industry.
  • No Russian film and TV outfits will attend MipTV which is set to take place in April in Cannes. “RX stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine, particularly with our employees around the world who have family and friends in the Ukraine,” said Reed Expositions. “We also stand in solidarity with our Russian employees working in challenging conditions,” added the banner.
  • Eurovision Song Contest, FIFA World Cup suspend Russian participation.
  • Netflix not be adding Russian propaganda programming to its platform in the territory. Under a law to take effect from March 1, Netflix would have been obligated to carry content from Channel One, entertainment network NTV and a Russian Orthodox Church channel.

Update: Cannes Film Festival has announced on Tuesday that it will not welcome any Russian delegations or attendees with ties to the government. Netflix has paused all future projects and acquisitions from Russia.

  1. I don’t think that will bother anyone. The internet is global. Also in an era where everything is a copy or inspired by something else this will not bite. Waste of time IMO.

  2. BBC Studios have now announced they won’t licence shows in Russia and called for the current series of Dancing with the Stars to be removed from air, along with The Green Planet.
