Nine to screen Shane Warne Memorial Service on 9GEM

Howzat? Memorial for legendary Nine commentator is pushed to network's multichannel in between Antiques Roadshow & Midsomer Murders.

How quickly they forget….

Nine will screen the Shane Warne Memorial on its multichannel 9GEM on Wednesday night -despite Seven and 10 screening on their primary channels.

This is despite Warne having been a Nine commentator and favourite of Kerry and James Packer.

Nine had originally left a two hour slot available on its primary channel, but has now pushed it to 9GEM in between Antiques Roadshow and Midsomer Murders.

It will air Live 7pm AEDT.

ABC News and FOX Cricket will also screen.

Updated: Melbourne viewers will now see the memorial on Nine.

  1. The service will be on HD on Gem. The ABC are putting it on their 4th channel so as not to lose any regular viewers. I think 7 will stick with it, they have ditched The Rookie to burn off an extra episode of SAS Australia on Tuesday. With Nine moving the service to Gem they will probably get the highest ratings. 5 Channels showing the same thing will mostly help Netflix and some competition is a good thing for viewers.

  2. The Warnie tribute the other night didn’t light overnight ratings on fire for Seven. I’m sure all networks have looked at this and had some thoughts going forward. Moving the service from the main network is likely a smart move from Nine and I wouldn’t be surprised if 7 follows.
Warnie contributed so much to the game and was loved by all Australians but a memorial service being televised across all FTA and some pay channels is likely going to calve up a already small audience. It’s best this is done across the secondary channels then the main.
Nine and Seven would be best running normal programming.
Also away from avid fans time has past since the tragic loss of Warnie. If the memorial service was held a week after it would’ve drawn a wider audience.
It’s hard, as when you think of the issues of this broadcast you try to be respectful. RIP Warnie.

    1. It’s true the numbers will be carved up given it’s on multiple networks, but there are also international names who will be performing, unlike the special this week. It will be broadcast live to UK, India, Pakistan and more. Given Warnie was a Nine commentator I feel it deserves better. Bert’s funeral was on every network but not appropriate to shelve it off to 9GO! in between Big Bang reruns.

      1. Berts Funeral wasn’t in prime time though. TV is a numbers game, I can’t see it being justified all three networks running it on main channel. Ratings won’t be high for all 3 networks

  3. Fair call on 9.

Not everyone in Aus will want to watch this. Sure there’s streaming, but if I was stuck with just FTA, I would be looking for any other option (even MAFS)

  4. I bet they change their minds and screen it on the main channel. After all the work he’s done for the game, and the ratings he has bought the nine network, they have to show the man the respect.
