Bang (Season One And Two)

This is the story of a brother, a sister and a gun. Quiet Sam’s (Jacob Ifan, A Discovery Of Witches) life is transformed when he is entrusted to look after a gun. The weapon empowers Sam and he breaks the law. Unfortunately for Sam, his ambitious policewoman sister Gina (Catrin Stewart, Doctor Who, Misfits) is paid to uphold it. The story begins with the discovery of the body of a local businessman in the town’s marina. The investigation into Stevie Rose’s death unearths a mystery involving a ruthless widow, stolen cars, a notorious moneylender, and a people trafficking ring. While Gina and her colleagues investigate Stevie’s murder, pressures in Sam’s personal life drive him to shoot the gun. By using the weapon Sam becomes unwittingly connected to the police’s investigation and he finds himself being hunted by the police. Ambitious Gina goes above and beyond the call of duty to solve Stevie’s murder. She soon unearths information about her own father’s murder when she and Sam were children. The discovery that her father might not have been a victim of mistaken identity blurs the personal and professional for Gina and she starts to investigate her father’s criminal past with a view to putting personal demons to rest.

Stella Blomkvist (Season Two)
In Icelandic with English subtitles.
Picking up two years after the first season, we find lawyer Stella (Heida Reed) in a downward spiral and about to embark on a dark journey where her wits, her sense of justice, and even her belief in herself will be truly tested. Across three interconnected storylines, each densely plotted and containing diabolical murders, we follow a frustrated and angry Stella as she continuously makes destructive choices and fails to control her long-standing obsession with Dagbjört (Sara Dögg Ásgeirsdóttir), the Prime Minister. On top of everything, she is pregnant and has limited options, courtesy of Dagbjört’s new legislation. But you can’t keep a good woman down. As Stella defends her clients from injustice and pieces together clues for each murder, she hurtles towards a dramatic showdown with her arch nemesis.

Pray, Obey, Kill
A six episodes available to stream. In Swedish with English subtitles.
On a freezing cold night in January 2004, gunshots rang out across the sleepy Swedish village of Knutby. A young woman was murdered, and her neighbour suffered multiple gunshot wounds. When a suspect emerges, no one can quite believe it. The world’s attention turned towards the tight-knit Pentecostal congregation and the ensuing court case became an international sensation.

One Response

  1. The Nordic series Beforeigners is back as well with season two, which continues with most of the same characters from season one. I would pick this show as the best of the current SBS on Demand crop, however Beforeigners may not be everyone’s cup of tea as the themes are not always politically correct which I confess is the main attraction for me, that and the original screenplay which has a lot of potential left in it should HBOMax Europe have the funding and courage to make season three.
