World on Fire finally returns to filming

UK period drama has finally returned to filming following the pandemic.

UK period drama World on Fire -no pun intended- has finally returned to filming following the pandemic interruptus.

Creator Peter Bowker said in a statement that the “long wait” between seasons was down to “a certain pandemic”, but that it made the “beginning of filming especially exciting”.

“It has been a real joy to pick up the story with our inspirational cast, both our established regulars and new and exciting talent who have embraced the show’s scale and ambition,” he continued.

Season 2, which will consist of six episodes, will take viewers back to October 1940, where lone pilots are tasked with destroying German bombers above the streets of Manchester.

The show will follow the war “from the streets of Britain into occupied France, Nazi Germany, and to the sands of the North African desert” as troops struggle to adapt to a different style of combat.

World on Fire, starring Helen Hunt, Sean Bean and Lesley Manville, has screened in Australia on BBC First and SBS.

  1. The gap will do it no favours. Remember it being a show of two halves really – the Sean Bean side of things quite watchable, the Helen Hunt side more of a chore.

  2. Count me among those who thought the show was lost. My initial reaction was one of “have I seen season 1? Hang on was it the one with Sean Bean?” Pleased to see it ‘back’.

  3. World on Fire appeared to have got lost in the mists of time, I certainly had forgotten about this show. The first season released in 2019 was reasonable viewing with some good production values, especially the action scenes, but the screenplay by necessity had to edit some historical timelines, which admittedly most younger viewers would never notice. Realistically, this show should have at least four seasons made to do the subject justice, but now the producers will be lucky if they eventually make three.
