This England: teaser

First look at Kenneth Branagh as PM Boris Johnson in upcoming UK drama.

A teaser has been released for This England, a UK drama starring Kenneth Branagh as PM Boris Johnson.

The five-parter, penned by Michael Winterbottom and Kieron Quirke, premieres in the UK on 21st September with a cast including Ophelia Lovibond (W1A) as Carrie Symonds, Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch) as Matt Hancock, Shri Patel (Pennyworth) as Rishi Sunak, and Simon Paisley Day (Brexit: The Uncivil War) as Dominic Cummings.

Chrissie Carras, Head of Branded Services, BBC Studios Australia and New Zealand, said: “Different countries responded to COVID-19 in very different ways. BBC First is the home of premium British drama and we are pleased to bring this fascinating insight into how the UK tackled the devastating events that affected the world to Australian audiences.”

It is confirmed to screen in Australia on BBC First on September 29.

Based on Boris Johnson’s tumultuous first months as UK Prime Minister, This England traces the impact on Britain of the first wave of the pandemic. The drama takes us inside the halls of power, as Johnson (Branagh) grapples with Covid-19, Brexit, and a controversial personal and political life. The events in government are interwoven with first-hand testimonies from around the country, from the experts and scientists racing against time; the doctors, nurses and care-home workers working tirelessly and heroically on the frontline; and ordinary people whose lives were thrown into turmoil.

  1. Is Kenneth Branagh continuing to follow in the footsteps of Laurence Olivier and is looking for roles to use prosthetic noses in his later career. In his autobiography Olivier pondered on the number of false noses he tried out to get into character for his Richard III roles, he wondered if it hid the insecurity he had as an actor, as he did suffer from severe stage fright. I have to say that Kenneth’s appearance as Boris Johnson is brilliant but maybe they should wait until he is no longer British PM, but such is modern politics nowadays.
