Oprah ends deal with Apple TV+

Major 2018 deal is reportedly winding up, just days after a new documentary launched.

Oprah Winfrey and Apple TV+ are reportedly ending their multiyear content deal.

The news comes just days after the debut of Sidney, a doco profiling Hollywood legend Sidney Poitier.

When the deal was signed in 2018, it was to encompass film, TV, applications, books and other content to be distributed across Apple platforms. But it was also was non-exclusive, with two of her recent high-profile programs with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and with Adele, screening on CBS.

Other Winfrey produced content on Apple has included The Me You Can’t See, a partnership with Prince Harry focusing on mental health, The Oprah Conversation a series of discussions with newsmakers, and Oprah Talks.

After Winfrey abandoned the documentary On the Record, which centered on a former music executive who accused Russell Simmons of sexual misconduct, Apple dropped a planned docuseries titled Toxic Workplace that would have examined a broad swath of sexual misconduct at work.

Sources suggest Winfrey and Apple TV+ will continue to work together on a project-by-project basis.

  1. Do these big talent deals work? The only one of these I knew about was Sidney and I can hardly think of any of the Shonda Rhimes Netflix shows and I have seen at least a little of most of her ABC shows.
