Summer Love: Sept 7

Guests: Miranda Tapsell and Richard Davies.

Guest cast in tonight’s Summer Love are Miranda Tapsell and Richard Davies.

30-something couple Kelly (Miranda Tapsell) and Craig (Richard Davies) are enjoying their Christmas break. Deeply in love and seemingly carefree, it’s soon apparent that there is one unspoken concern: Kelly is Aboriginal and Craig is white, and Craig never seems to register the racism Kelly experiences.

When they hit a kangaroo and are forced to look after her joey, Kelly’s grievances come to the surface. The joey becomes a metaphor for the baby Kelly and Craig might have; how will Craig protect his Aboriginal child from something he can’t see?

Written by James Colley (The Weekly, Gruen) and Miranda Tapsell (Top End Wedding). Directed by Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope.

9pm Wednesday on ABC.

  1. Love this show. Wayne Hope and Robyn Butler have created something truly captivating and magical here. The first episode was brilliant. Was curious to see if the second standalone episode would be as good given it had the same location and totally new cast. Wow did it impress! Brilliantly crafted. Set up was quick. Perfectly timed with humour and emotion done with heart and an underlying message that was delivered beautifully by Miranda Tapsell. I challenge anyone not to be moved by the scene with her in the hallway of her characters experience as an eleven year old.
It is so important as a country that we see our local stories, identities and issues discussed in this way for us to reflect upon, learn and create empathy for each other.
Sadly quality locally made shows like this are few and far between on our TV screens. Butler and Hope have cracked the code here and should be given the keys to the ABC’s dwindling bank account. More please!

  2. This series is so relatable, the first episode was so funny the way it took a turn near the end. We need more of these kinds of Australian made show because we have boundless and abundant talent in this country who can turn their talents to what ever shows and films. The only channel now that makes enough of these shows is the ABC all the other free to air is mostly reality garbage or American garbage. That’s the reason I subscribe to Foxtel and several other streaming services to get a break from reality. We are so are behind in this country, moving away from reality will free up money to spend on decent Australian content such as drama, mystery and comedy etc., besides supporting our own actors and actresses (yes “actresses” by the way) instead of them struggling to find work in this country which is just as much theirs as anyones. Hopefully with the new government they will fund more Australian content. Here’s hoping anyway.
