Airdate: Whitstable Pearl

Cold death is served up alongside warm fish & chips in a seaside murder mystery series getting a Free to Air premiere.

Here’s one buried in the guide that may be of interest….

9GEM tonight will give a Free to Air premiere to mystery series Whitstable Pearl.

The 6 part series based on Julie Wassmer’s novels stars Kerry Godliman (After Life, Derek) and Howard Charles, (The Widow, The Red Line) and previously screened on Acorn TV.

It begins with a double episode. A second season will screen on Acorn TV in late November.

“The Free Waters / Random Acts”
Restaurant owner Pearl Nolan discovers the body of her friend and oyster supplier chained to the anchor of his ship.

8:40pm tonight on 9GEM.

  1. No “catch-up” for Whitstable Pearl or series 1 of McDonald & Dodds. Interestingly, fta GEM allowed pop-up ads for series 2 of WP on Acorn which is a competitor streaming service. (Spoiler) Rob Brydon, WILTY, plays a plausible manipulative villain on M&D S2 E1.

  2. Seriously Foxtel needs to update or do a new version. Checked it this afternoon to record showed only season 1 episode 1, 60 minutes, after checking whilst recording app said season 1 episode 1 but 120 minutes. I’ve been in a dispute with Foxtel over this app since August. Supposed to be level 2 tech support but they’ve not done much. Complained in an email with screenshots of the problems and they contacted me by phone and offered my premium drama pack free till September 2023, sure does pay to complain, but sadly they’re still sorting it. My bank account is okay with that though 😀

    1. It’s not a Foxtel issue on this occasion. Their EPG equates to what is supplied by 9GEM. They screened two episodes spanning 2 hours, so it would have covered you for both episodes which were correctly listed as “The Free Waters / Random Acts.” A network may often programme back to back episodes and just list it as one title to span both, it can vary.

        1. I’ve addressed the issue again today with Foxtel and their app attaching screenshots of said show taken earlier in the day and other issues with it like not being able to use the account feature and shop. Their reply was a satellite problem and my postcode. Absolute BS I’m in a major city so blew that theory out the water, the satellite dropping out that’s a laugh they eventually conceded there is a problem. Awaiting technical support from Sydney not the Philippines call centre. Compensation is 1 month free subscription for inconvenience caused. Asked why they had a David Attenborough doco on BBC Earth with a picture of the Neighbours cast from Ten with the synopsis no excuse there but would follow up. But didn’t take them long after the phone call to fix that. Screenshots best invention ever. Human error more feasible though. Webmaster have doubts there though.

  3. Love this genre. Best part watch closely treat it as a jigsaw puzzle, pick up the clues then put all the pieces together and see just how good and observant you really think you are. Great exercise to improve memory.

  4. Another Restauranteer/Detective show. It’s got to be more interesting than the weak plots of My Life Is Murder, the dead pan nerd humour of Dodds & McDonald, or endless Vera and Midsomer Murders repeats on the ABC. Acorn seem to like selling 1 season of their shows to FTA to promote them. So Gem has listed 1 ep but showing 1 and 2.
