Axed: DC’s Stargirl

US superhero series will wrap in coming weeks, with full creative closure from the showrunner.

DC’s Stargirl will end with its current third season.

The series is currently airing its third season, with a finale set to air in early December.

Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” said creator and executive producer Geoff Johns. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built!”

The series follows high school student Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) as she leads an unlikely group of young heroes to take on the legacy of DC’s very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America.

The cast also included Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy, Alkoya Brunson, Neil Hopkins, Joy Osmanski, and Amy Smart.

“Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it,” Bassinger said. “I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart.”

Stargirl is screening in Australia on FOX8 and Binge.

  1. I find it a curious fascination how in recent times that the once classic DC and Marvel universes have now become subjects of social media debate and scorn, I’m not sure that is what the original comic book creators / writers like Bob Kane and Stan Lee wanted for their super hero characters all those many decades ago. In some ways the DC’s Stargirl series did try to make a show suitable for everyone, almost in a Disney style before Disney became Disney+. In my opinion the creative issue for the Stargirl series was that it was a stand alone show with no immediate prospect of CW crossovers or links to Warner Bros other DC franchise superhero characters, Stargirl had limited itself in creative scope almost from the beginning. Having said that, if CW survived Stargirl probably would have continued on for more than 3 seasons, it’s the American studio way.

  2. With a lot of the DC comic character genre out there they are often a required tastes, Lucifer was on Fox 8?, doing well, then bam it was cancelled after a few seasons only to be picked up by Netflix. Unfortunately TV shows can be hit and miss regardless of what fans like or want but then someone gets a lightbulb moment and decides to do a revival so never say never who knows. In TV land we all live in hope unfortunately.

  3. Stargirl has been rather slow paced since it moved from DC’s streaming channel, and was probably lucky to get a 3rd season given that the CW cancelled most of their shows pending the network’s sale. The hold up was that Paramount and WB wanted to force the new owners to buy all their content from them, from what has been published after the sale was finalised it’s only some of their content. So far they have cancelled Nancy Drew and Stargirl, two of their recent shows that survived, after their current seasons. At least they had time to give them proper endings. The Winchesters isn’t doing well either.

    1. Totally agree. The first season was excellent before grinding its way to a crawl since the beginning of S2… it’s hard to watch now tbh. I’m more surprised that it got a S3 than it not returning for a S4.
